Upper Gate in the Old Town

About

The High Gate, often referred to by locals as the Wysoka Brama, is a majestic piece of medieval history preserved in the heart of Olsztyn. It is the only surviving city gate of the three that once protected the entrance to the settlement. Built at the end of the 14th century from traditional red brick, this six-story tower stands 23 meters tall and serves as the city's main symbol and the grand entrance to the Old Town.

This massive structure was once part of a complex defensive system that included walls, towers, and moats encircling the city in a bend of the Łyna River. In Poland, such Gothic structures always draw attention with their austere beauty: the lower level of the tower features a high passageway, while the upper floors have retained their martial appearance, complemented by characteristic crenellations added during later reconstructions.

Today, the High Gate is more than just an architectural monument; it is a living border between the modern city and its historical past. It blends harmoniously into the landscape alongside iconic sites such as the Castle of the Warmian Chapter and St. James Cathedral. For many tourists, this is where their introduction to the remarkable Warmia region begins.

What to Do

Your exploration of the landmark begins with a walk through the massive arched gateway, which for centuries served as the primary entrance to the city. The High Gate is an ideal spot to appreciate the strength of medieval fortifications. Visitors enjoy examining the details of the brickwork and taking panoramic photos of the tower, which looks particularly striking under evening illumination.

From here, it’s easy to start a walking tour: right by the gate, you can see preserved sections of the city walls and the Bailiff's House (Dom Burmistrza)—the city's oldest residential building, dating back to the 14th century. An observant traveler will notice the Gothic architectural nuances and the characteristic merlons at the top of the tower, which give it the look of a fairytale fortress.

For those who enjoy cultural leisure, it’s worth combining a viewing of the gate with a visit to the Museum of Warmia and Masuria, located nearby. During the warmer months, tourist routes often pass through this area, and guides share fascinating legends about the defense of Olsztyn. Walking through the gate, you will find yourself in a labyrinth of narrow Old Town streets, where you can relax in one of the cozy cafes while enjoying the view of this historical symbol of Olsztyn.

Getting There

The High Gate is located in the very heart of the historical center at Staromiejska 1. If you are already walking through the Old Town, reaching it is easy: the walk from the castle takes about 5 minutes, and from the Old Town Hall, just 3 minutes. For those using public transport, the nearest bus and tram stops are located near the Town Hall or the St. John’s Bridge (Most Świętego Jana).

From the Olsztyn main railway station, which is approximately 2–3 kilometers away, you can take buses No. 1, 6, or 11. The trip takes about 10 minutes, though many tourists prefer a pleasant 20-minute walk along the city's main street directly to the brick walls of the tower.

Travelers arriving at Olsztyn-Mazury Airport (about 60 km from the city) can take a train or bus to the station and then transfer to local transport or a taxi. If you arrive by car, it is recommended to leave it at one of the public parking lots on Staromiejska or Grunwaldzka streets, as the central part of the city is a pedestrian zone.

History & Facts

The history of the High Gate is inextricably linked to the development of Olsztyn. It was erected in the late 14th century as the city, founded in 1353 by Johannes von Lajsy, began to expand. At that time, the settlement was surrounded by a formidable ring of defensive walls with three entrances, and it was the Wysoka Brama (as it is called in Poland) that eventually became the main fortification hub of the northeastern part of the city.

Interestingly, other gates remained in the city until the beginning of the 19th century; however, the Lower Gate collapsed in 1806, and the third was eventually dismantled. Thus, the High Gate remains the sole surviving witness to the medieval fortification system. The appearance of the tower we see today includes 19th-century elements—it was then that the decorative crenellations (merlons) were added to the top, giving the structure an even more imposing look.

Over the centuries, the area around the gate changed: moats were filled in, and walls were gradually demolished to give the city room to grow. After the destruction of 1945, the Old Town in Poland was actively restored, and restorers made every effort to preserve the authentic Gothic brickwork and the majestic spirit of the Prussian Middle Ages embodied in this red brick.

Time Needed

For a quick look at the High Gate itself and taking photos against the backdrop of its powerful brick walls, you will need about 20–30 minutes. This is enough time to appreciate the scale of the Gothic architecture and examine the details of the masonry.

However, considering that the gate opens the way to the main treasures of the Old Town, we recommend setting aside 1.5 to 2 hours for your walk. This will give you enough time to reach the castle, see the Town Hall, and soak up the atmosphere of the ancient streets. If you plan to visit the Museum of Warmia and Masuria or book a guided tour, it’s best to allow up to 3 hours for the visit.

Working Hours

As befits a major architectural symbol accessible to all, the High Gate is an open-air site. You can admire its grandeur at any time that suits you—it is open for viewing 24 hours a day.

According to official data, the landmark operates on the following schedule:

  • Monday — Sunday: around the clock (Open 24 hours).

This makes the Wysoka Brama an excellent spot for both morning walks and evening photo sessions under the atmospheric glow of city lamps.
