Its dimensions are truly impressive: at 84 meters long, the building dominates the Old Town skyline as a unique architectural monument where Gothic, Renaissance, and lush Baroque styles harmoniously intertwine.

Inside, the cathedral is breathtaking in its richness: the interior is adorned with nine majestic altars and elegant Corinthian columns. Of particular value are the preserved Gothic elements, such as the stellar ribbed vaults in the presbytery and the unique cellular vaulting in the sacristy, the span of which is considered one of the largest in Europe.

For believers and art enthusiasts, the temple is also significant for housing the miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows—the cathedral's oldest and most revered relic. The building's facade, featuring a powerful 55-meter bell tower, greets every visitor with a sense of solemnity, inviting them to connect with the region's centuries-old history.

What to Do

A visit to the cathedral offers guests more than just spiritual reflection; it is a chance to study masterpieces of Lithuanian architecture in detail. Be sure to look for the main two-tier 18th-century altar, decorated with sculptures and paintings, as well as the unique wooden altar in the left nave, featuring grapevine ornaments. The play of light filtering through the high lancet windows creates a special, solemn atmosphere within the temple.

In addition to exploring the interiors, you can often attend organ concerts or solemn masses, which allow you to fully experience the building's acoustic grandeur. Photographers will appreciate the rhythmic pattern of the buttresses on the exterior facades and the panoramic views of the bell tower, which stands out strikingly against the tiled roofs of the Old Town.

For those seeking tranquility, the cathedral is an ideal spot for a quiet stroll through the naves. You can admire old paintings and sculptures by unknown 17th-century masters or simply sit in silence, enjoying the majesty of the Gothic vaults and the cool air within the ancient walls.

Getting There

The cathedral is located at Vilniaus gatvė 1, at the very beginning of the Old Town's main pedestrian street. You can reach it on foot from the Town Hall Square or the ancient castle in just 5–10 minutes, enjoying the views of the charming streets along the way.

If you are using public transport, look for the "Rotušės aikštė" or "Vilniaus g." stops, which are served by popular bus and trolleybus routes (such as No. 1, 2, 4, 6). It is only a couple of minutes' walk from the stop to the entrance. For those coming from the railway station, a taxi or bus ride will take about 15 minutes.

Travelers by car should keep in mind that parking in the historic center is paid (approximately 1–2 euros per hour), and finding vacant spots on weekends can be challenging. From Kaunas Airport, the most convenient option is the direct bus No. 88, which reaches the city center in about 40 minutes.

History & Facts

The history of this majestic site began as early as 1413. It is believed that the first stone of the Gothic church's foundation was laid at the initiative of the legendary Grand Duke Vytautas the Great. Over the centuries, the building was rebuilt several times following fires and various historical upheavals: in the 17th century, the main naves and the powerful tower were added, and the interior gradually acquired its famous Baroque features.

Notably, at the end of the 19th century, an elegant Neo-Gothic chapel designed by architect G. Werner was added, providing even more stylistic diversity to the exterior. About a hundred years after these works, the church officially received cathedral status, cementing its role as the spiritual heart of the region.

The temple was granted its current honorary title of minor basilica in 1921 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Diocese of Samogitia. During the periods when Kaunas served as the temporary capital, the cathedral was the country's primary Catholic church, hosting the most significant state and ecclesiastical ceremonies under its vaults.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all nine altars, study the architectural details of the facades, and soak in the atmosphere of the ancient temple, it usually takes about 1–1.5 hours. This is enough time for a thoughtful introduction to the interiors and a short walk around the cathedral grounds.

If you plan to attend a solemn service or an evening organ music concert, you should budget additional time in your schedule. The cathedral is located right in the middle of a popular tourist route, making it very easy to combine your visit with lunch at one of the cozy cafes in the Old Town.

Working Hours

The Cathedral Basilica warmly opens its doors to parishioners and tourists daily from 06:30 to 19:30. This generous schedule allows for visits both in the early morning and in the evening, when soft lighting beautifully emphasizes the architectural forms and Baroque decor.

Please keep in mind that during masses and religious holidays, access for touring certain parts of the interior may be limited. Before your visit, it is recommended to check the current service schedule on the official website or inquire on-site to ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible and does not disturb the faithful.
