The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni, also known by its Kalmyk name Burkhan Bakshin Altan Sume and Tibetan Geden Sheddup Choikorling, is the heart of Buddhism in the Republic of Kalmykia. This majestic khurul (as Buddhist temples are called in Kalmykia) is located in the center of the city of Elista and is rightfully considered not only the largest Buddhist temple in the region but also the largest in Europe, attracting pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.

The temple building is striking in its scale: its height reaches 63 meters, making it a prominent landmark in the city. Inside, visitors are greeted by an impressive nine-meter statue of Buddha covered in gold leaf. This statue is the second largest in Russia and Europe, symbolizing spiritual grandeur and tranquility.
