In terms of size and grandeur, the Ascension Cathedral ranks third among Russia's Orthodox churches, surpassed only by such massive structures as the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. As a striking example of cross-domed architecture, it leaves an indelible impression on everyone who sees it for the first time and is rightfully considered a jewel of ecclesiastical architecture.
The architectural appearance of the cathedral is truly impressive. Its total height reaches 74.7 meters, crowned by a system of seven domes. The central, largest hemispherical dome dominates the main nave, surrounded by four domes atop four-tier bell towers. On the western side, the main bell tower with a dome is attached to the main structure, serving as the primary entrance with a porch. The eastern part of the church is completed by a picturesque two-tier apse topped by the seventh dome. The interior of the cathedral can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers simultaneously, and the total weight of this monumental structure is estimated at a staggering 135,000 tons.
