About

Tucked away in the picturesque Mamayka microdistrict, the Oktyabrsky Sanatorium Zoo is a unique corner of nature in the heart of the resort city. It is the only full-fledged zoo in Sochi, featuring an impressive collection of exotic animals from around the world within its compact yet well-kept grounds. A stroll here allows guests to see rare fauna surrounded by subtropical greenery without leaving Russia.

The charm of this place lies in its intimate and cozy atmosphere: enclosures are nestled in greenery, while peacocks stroll grandly along shady alleys amidst fountains and elegant sculptures. The zoo takes pride in its residents, including majestic Bengal and Ussuri tigers, graceful cheetahs, pumas, leopards, and even rare ligers—extraordinary hybrids of a lion and a tigress. The famous white kangaroo is a particular favorite among visitors.

It’s an ideal spot for a family outing, where an educational tour harmoniously blends with relaxation in the fresh air. Ticket prices are quite affordable (from 400 to 800 rubles depending on age), and for those staying at the sanatorium itself, entry to this wonderful animal world remains free.

What to Do

The main highlight here is, of course, observing the habits of wild cats. You can get an up-close look at rare ligers, considered the largest cats on the planet, and admire a pair of cheetahs brought from distant Tanzania. It’s equally fascinating to watch the playful monkeys, gentle llamas, and kangaroos, including a rare snow-white resident.

In addition to self-guided tours, visitors can join fascinating guided excursions. The guides share amazing facts: for instance, you'll learn how servals perform their incredible jumps while hunting or why pumas can mimic the voices of their prey. Such talks make the visit not only interesting but truly educational for both children and adults.

The zoo's grounds are a wonderful place for photo shoots. You can take vibrant photos against the backdrop of exotic plants, beautiful fountains, and sculptures. And if you're lucky, you might witness a free-roaming peacock proudly fanning its tail on the park paths, creating the perfect moment for an unforgettable shot.

Getting There

Reaching this corner of nature is quite simple, as it is located in the popular Mamayka microdistrict at 34b Plekhanova St. Public transport runs regularly from the city center: buses and minibuses (such as No. 105 or No. 125) heading to the “Oktyabrsky Sanatorium” or “Mamayka” stops are suitable. From the stop, you need to walk about 5–10 minutes to the sanatorium entrance.

If you prefer comfort, a taxi ride from the central part of Sochi will take approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. For those arriving from Adler Airport, a taxi or transfer is also the most convenient option, although you can also take a bus with a transfer.

An important detail: since the zoo is located on the secured grounds of the sanatorium, you may be asked to present a form of identification when entering through the main gates. After passing the checkpoint, it is about a 200-meter walk along landscaped park paths to the enclosures.

History & Facts

The history of this place began as a small petting corner, which eventually grew into a full-fledged and the only zoo in Sochi. Over the years, it has become a true pride of the resort, earning the nickname "White Kangaroo" thanks to its rare inhabitants. The sanatorium management pays great attention to creating conditions that closely mimic the animals' natural habitats.

The zoo is known for its success in breeding rare species. A joey was born here in 2011, followed by adorable monkeys in 2012, and later, Ussuri tiger cubs. One of the most notable events of 2015 was the birth of three ligers—unique hybrids of a lion and a tigress, which happens very rarely in captivity.

The zoo played a special role during the preparation for the Winter Olympic Games: the leopards living here became a living symbol of the competition, reminding guests of the importance of preserving the Red Data Book species of the Caucasus. Recently, the collection was joined by a young pair of cheetahs from Tanzania, for whom a special modern enclosure was built.

Time Needed

A complete visit to see all the zoo's residents usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours. This is enough time to walk around all the enclosures without rushing, watch the animals being fed, and take commemorative photos against the scenic landscapes and fountains.

For families planning a visit with small children, we recommend allowing a bit more time. Little ones often linger at the monkey or rabbit enclosures, and the chance to see peacocks wandering freely along the paths can captivate young explorers for a long time.

Working Hours

The zoo is open to visitors daily, without weekends or lunch breaks. According to the current schedule, the complex doors are open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

It is recommended to visit in the morning or closer to evening when the heat subsides—at these times, many animals are more active, and a walk through the shady alleys of the sanatorium becomes as pleasant as possible.
