A peaceful and creative atmosphere awaits visitors at the garden museum. The main activity here is strolling along the shaded alleys, where you can see not only the famous Friendship Tree but also a whole galaxy of "offspring" trees planted by famous public figures and cosmonauts. Be sure to examine the crown of the central tree: up to 45 types of citrus can bear fruit on it simultaneously.

Inside the museum pavilion, an impressive collection of unique exhibits awaits you. These are gifts brought by guests from all continents: national souvenirs, rare coins, and even capsules containing soil from historical sites. Viewing these treasures allows you to feel the scale of the idea of international unity established by the garden's founders.

For those interested in science, informative tours are held that reveal the secrets of plant breeding. And if you are lucky enough to attend one of the cultural events or festivals, you can witness how nature unites people of different nationalities in the heart of the resort city.

History & Facts

The history of this unique site began in 1934. Soviet breeder Fyodor Mikhailovich Zorin planted a wild lemon seedling to develop new frost-resistant citrus varieties. During his experiments, he made hundreds of grafts into the tree's crown, turning it into a literal living catalog of botanical achievements.

The tree received its symbolic name in 1957, when Vietnamese doctors, impressed by the experiment, suggested making a commemorative graft as a sign of friendship between nations. The tradition quickly caught on: over the decades, representatives from more than 160 countries have left their "autographs" on the branches. Among those whose grafts adorn the crown were such prominent figures as Yuri Gagarin, Indira Gandhi, and Ho Chi Minh.

In 1981, the garden museum was officially opened around the famous plant. Today, there are more than 650 grafts on the main tree, and the collection of gifts from foreign delegations exceeds 20,000 items. One of the museum's most touching relics is a box of soil from Yasnaya Polyana, sent as a gift in 1965.

Time Needed

For a leisurely exploration of the garden museum, most travelers require 1 to 2 hours. This is quite enough time to carefully examine the main tree, study the rich collection of gifts in the museum halls, and enjoy the silence in the shaded alleys of the subtropical garden.

If you plan to join an organized tour or want to take many photos of rare plants, it is worth allowing a bit more time — about 2.5 hours. A visit to the museum is often combined with a walk through nearby parks, making it an excellent stop on a half-day itinerary.
