History & Facts

The history of this sacred site began in 1920 with the reburial of prominent figures of the revolution—Pavel Protapov and Pyotr Razumikhin. A year later, twelve sailors from the gunboat "Elpidifor-412" who fell in a naval battle were laid to rest in the mass grave. The first monument to the heroes of the Civil War appeared on this site in 1922.

During the Great Patriotic War, the memorial grounds became a burial site for partisans and soldiers who liberated the city in 1943. In the post-war period, the remains of soldiers were moved here from individual graves and hospital burial sites to form a single memorial complex.

The memorial acquired its modern appearance in 1967 when a large-scale reconstruction was carried out for the anniversary of the October Revolution. It was then, on November 7, 1967, that the Eternal Flame—a symbol of the undying memory of generations—was first lit in a solemn ceremony to the sounds of Dmitry Kabalevsky's Requiem.

The last major update to the complex took place in 1983, marking the 40th anniversary of the city's liberation from occupation. Today, the memorial unites the memory of heroes from different eras, serving as a reminder of the courage of the region's residents and defenders.

Time Needed

For a thoughtful tour of the memorial complex and a walk through the Square of Military Glory, 30 to 60 minutes is usually sufficient. This time will allow you to slowly walk along the Alley of Glory, study the information on the stands, and lay flowers at the Eternal Flame.

If you are interested in the detailed history of the region, plan for a slightly longer visit to carefully read all the commemorative plaques. In the evening, the memorial looks especially solemn thanks to its lighting, which may encourage you to stay longer for quiet reflection.
