The white-stone two-story building impresses with its slender proportions and intricate exterior decor. The church's uniqueness lies in its tiered composition: five octagonal drums with domes create a soaring silhouette, while the tall bell tower with a spire serves as an excellent landmark for travelers. This attraction, which Russia proudly presents among its cultural treasures, recreates the forms of the best cathedrals in Tobolsk and is a vital part of the old city's visual character.

Today, it is not just an active church but also a point of interest for all history and architecture enthusiasts. Located on the site of the first Tomsk fortress, the church serves as a living reminder of events from four centuries ago, attracting pilgrims and tourists with its renovated interiors and special peaceful atmosphere.

What to Do

A visit to the church offers guests not only a spiritual experience but also aesthetic pleasure. Inside this two-story building, you can see two spaces with completely different atmospheres: the upper chapel, consecrated in honor of the Renewal of the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord, and the lower one, where services are held in a more intimate setting. Be sure to notice the renovated iconostasis and ancient icons that have been carefully restored by masters.

For connoisseurs of architectural details, the exterior is fascinating: from complex Baroque window frames to unusual elements reminiscent of the Gothic style. If you have the chance, look out for the thousand-pood bell and the huge gilded cross on the central dome—gifts from famous past benefactors that remain the pride of the parishioners.

Photography enthusiasts and fans of panoramic views should spend some time on the grounds. Voskresenskaya Hill offers magnificent views of the historical districts, making it an ideal spot for memorable photos. 3D tours and guided excursions are also available, allowing you to study the history of every brick of this unique structure in detail.

Getting There

Finding your way to the church is easy, as it is located in the heart of the historical center at 10 Oktyabrsky Vzvoz Street. If you are already walking along central streets like Prospekt Lenina or Sovetskaya, a pleasant walk to Voskresenskaya Hill will take only 15–20 minutes. The climb up the hill will reward you not only with an architectural masterpiece but also with the wonderful air of the old city.

For those who prefer public transport, buses and shuttle taxis going to the "Oktyabrsky Vzvoz" or "Voskresenskaya Gora" stops are suitable. For example, from the Tomsk-1 railway station, you can take buses No. 4 or No. 7 directly, which takes about 20–30 minutes. Tram lines also run through this area, making the site accessible from any part of the city.

Travelers arriving from Bogashevo Airport will find it most convenient to take a taxi (the ride takes about 30–40 minutes) or catch a suburban bus to the bus station and then transfer to city routes. If you are traveling by private car, a small parking area is available directly at the church and on adjacent streets, though spaces may be limited on weekends.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the very foundation of the city. The first Resurrection Church was established in wood as early as 1622 in the northeastern part of the Tomsk fortress. For nearly two centuries, wooden structures replaced one another, suffering from fires and the passage of time, until in 1789 the decision was made to build a stone church using funds from parishioners.

Construction of the current building continued until 1803. It was built by talented Tomsk commoners who modeled its form after the famous Tobolsk churches. By the end of the 19th century, the church's appearance was enhanced with important details funded by local merchants: a closed porch staircase was added, and stoves were installed for heating the upper floor, allowing services to be held during harsh Siberian winters.

One of the most notable events in the church's history occurred in 1897. At that time, a massive thousand-pood bell, cast at the initiative of merchant Andrey Vasilyev, was raised to the bell tower. Simultaneously, merchant Innokenty Kukhterin gifted the church a massive gilded cross for the central dome. These elements remain symbols of the spiritual and material wealth of old Tomsk.

Interestingly, the church stands precisely where Russian Cossacks and local tribes built the first fortress in 1604. This makes it not just a religious site, but a true guardian of memory regarding the birth of the city on the banks of the Tom River.

Time Needed

To explore the attraction at a leisurely pace, it is recommended to set aside about 1–2 hours. This is plenty of time to study the rich exterior decor, go inside to admire the ancient iconostases, and take atmospheric photos against the backdrop of "Siberian Baroque."
