Its collections carefully preserve over 11,000 unique works. The collection spans a vast period, from rare 16th-century icons to works by modern masters of painting, graphic arts, and sculpture. Here, you can find canvases by both great Russian classics and renowned Western European artists.

The museum building itself deserves special attention—the former Siberian Revolutionary Committee, erected in 1926. Designed by the legendary architect A.D. Kryachkov, it is recognized as a federal architectural monument and serves as a magnificent example of the monumental style that has become a symbol of Krasny Prospect's historical character.

What to Do

In the museum halls, visitors can take a fascinating journey through the ages. The main activity here is exploring the permanent exhibition, which features masterpieces of classical Russian art. You can see firsthand the canvases you might have studied in textbooks and appreciate the skill of great painters in capturing light, emotion, and detail.

Fans of contemporary trends should look out for the exhibitions of modern Siberian art. The museum actively collaborates with local artists, regularly updating temporary exhibitions, which allows guests to feel the vibrant pulse of today's creativity. Regular thematic projects make every visit to the gallery unique in its own way.

Don't forget to take time to admire the architectural details of the building. The facade is adorned with a monumental sculptural composition by Stepan Nadolsky, while the high-ceilinged interior spaces create an ideal atmosphere for contemplation. A walk through these grand halls offers a sense of peace and inspiration, providing a temporary escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

The museum occupies a strategic location in the very heart of the city at 5 Krasny Prospect. If you are staying in the central districts, a walk to the museum will be a pleasant addition to your tour, allowing you to see other architectural landmarks along the way.

History & Facts

The history of this significant cultural center began on January 7, 1957, by decree of the USSR Council of Ministers. The initiative to create an art gallery came from local artists who, since the 1920s, had sought to establish a dedicated space in the city for storing and exhibiting works of art.

The official public opening took place on December 27, 1958. Initially, the collection was housed in several rooms of a residential building, with its core consisting of masterpieces transferred from the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage, and the Russian Museum. This allowed the Siberian museum to immediately secure a prominent place in the country's cultural hierarchy.

A landmark stage came in 1982 when the museum moved into the building of the former Sibrevkom (Siberian Revolutionary Committee), built by the outstanding architect A.D. Kryachkov in the Neoclassical style. In 2004, the institution's status was elevated—the Novosibirsk Art Gallery officially became a state art museum, reflecting the scale of its scientific and collecting activities.

Time Needed

To explore the main exhibition of the Novosibirsk Art Museum without rushing, most visitors will need 2 to 3 hours. This is enough time to see the key works by Russian masters and appreciate the architectural harmony of the halls.

If you plan to visit not only the permanent exhibition but also temporary modern art displays or to study the icon collection in detail, we recommend setting aside at least 4–5 hours. The museum is quite extensive, and thoughtful contemplation of the artworks requires a certain amount of time.

When planning your cultural leisure, please note that Monday is a day off at the museum. From Tuesday to Friday, the doors are open to visitors from 10:00 to 18:00.
