The museum building itself, built in 1935–1937, deserves special attention. This unique architectural structure is designed in the traditional Japanese "Teikan" style and is the only such example not only on Sakhalin but in the entire country. Its striking appearance immediately sets the stage for discovering the island's rich history.
Over its many years of existence, the museum has evolved into a prominent humanitarian research center in the Far East. It houses extensive collections covering the ethnography of indigenous peoples, archaeological finds telling the stories of ancient cultures, as well as vast materials on geology, botany, and zoology. The exhibitions detailedly reflect the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Sakhalin Region, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of this distinctive land.
