The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is one of the most important Buddhist shrines not only in Sri Lanka but in the entire world. Located in the country's cultural capital, Kandy, the temple houses a priceless relic — the left canine tooth of Gautama Buddha. According to legend, whoever possesses this relic holds absolute power, which is why it has been a symbol of royal rule for centuries. Every day, thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit this site to experience its spiritual energy.

The architectural complex is an outstanding example of the Kandyan style and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Ancient City of Kandy." While the temple's exterior may seem modest, its interior is strikingly luxurious: the halls are decorated with exquisite wood and ivory carvings, as well as gold and silver finishes. The relic itself is kept in a golden casket, which is placed inside six other caskets, similar to a nesting doll.
The temple grounds include more than just the main shrine. Here you will also find the former Royal Palace, the octagonal Pattirippuwa pavilion (previously used by monarchs to address the people), and several museums, including the World Buddhism Museum. The entire complex is picturesquely spread along the shores of the artificial Kandy Lake, which adds a special charm and sense of peace to the location.
