Linköping Cathedral

About

The majestic Linköping Cathedral is not only the primary architectural landmark that Linköping is proud of, but also one of the most massive Gothic structures in all of Europe. This grandiose building in Sweden is second in size only to Uppsala Cathedral, and it is rightfully considered the country's best-preserved medieval church building.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the 11th century when the first small wooden church was built here. Later, in the first half of the 12th century, a stone Romanesque basilica was erected on its foundation. However, its true golden age began in the 13th century when Linköping became an important religious center, and the building began to be actively reconstructed in the Gothic style.

The cathedral reached its current grand scale in the 14th century under the leadership of Bishop Karl. It was then that the nave was extended, and the western facade was created under the clear influence of the famous Cologne Cathedral. The 107-meter bell tower and elegant Gothic chapels were added even later, in the 15th century.

The fate of the temple was not always kind: in the mid-16th century, it suffered twice from devastating fires that destroyed the roof and the magnificent stucco work. The cathedral finally acquired its modern appearance after a large-scale reconstruction in 1965–1967, when the building’s famous spire and roof were restored.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the architectural details, study the ancient altar, and feel the grandeur of the interior, we recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours for your visit. This is plenty of time for a full introduction to the site.

If you plan to visit the cathedral during an organ concert or a solemn service, it is worth budgeting a little more time in your travel schedule.
