The building was designed by the renowned architect Sven Markelius and originally served as a "People's House" (Folkets hus). Today, this site in Sweden is a major hub for local university students. Under its roof lies the impressive 515-seat Forumteatern, which hosts everything from lectures to large-scale concerts and stand-up shows.

Kårhuset Kollektivet is famous for its democratic atmosphere. Here you can find everything from cozy pubs and a summer terrace to modern student apartments on the upper floors. The center is run by students themselves, giving the place a special, lively energy that is hard to find in typical commercial establishments.

What to Do

The highlight of the week here is the Husfest parties held on Fridays and Saturdays. You can start the evening at 5:00 PM in the pub with snacks and drinks, and move to the dance floor around 10:00 PM, where the disco continues until closing time at 3:00 AM. It's a great opportunity to experience the true drive of Swedish student life.

Culture enthusiasts should definitely visit Forumteatern. It regularly hosts student theater performances (spex), such as Holgerspexet, as well as stand-up comedy and musical concerts. If you're lucky, you might get to attend a sittning—a traditional Swedish formal banquet that is organized here for hundreds of people.

During the warmer months, be sure to visit the summer terrace to relax in the fresh air. Intellectuals will appreciate the regular quizzes, and those wanting to get closer to the community can even try volunteering. Please note that the center prioritizes safety: digital identification is often required for entry.

History & Facts

The building that now hums with student life has a rich history. It was built in 1953 as Folkets hus (The People's House) based on a design by the famous architect Sven Markelius. Opened in 1954, it became a striking example of late functionalist style. In those days, the Forumteatern hall served as the city's main cinema.

A new chapter began in 1987 when the building's functions started to shift, and in the late '90s, it came under the management of Linköping University student organizations. The venue was transformed into Nationernas Hus, housing pubs, restaurants, and a nightclub while preserving its theatrical traditions.

The current name, Kårhuset Kollektivet, was introduced in 2015. A few years prior, in 2008, the upper floors were renovated to accommodate 21 student apartments, creating a unique symbiosis of living space and a cultural center. Today, this building is recognized as an important architectural and social landmark of the city.
