The main building is surrounded by a magnificent park, within which true treasures are hidden: the country's oldest court theater, Confidencen, built in the Rococo style, and an elegant orangery that now serves as a sculpture museum. Sweden has preserved a cozy, intimate atmosphere here, which distinguishes Ulriksdal from more formal and monumental palaces.

Visitors are drawn here not only by the architectural grandeur but also by the eclectic interiors, which have preserved furniture from different centuries and the personal belongings of rulers. This place is ideal for those seeking inspiration in the silence of historical alleys and wishing to touch the living heritage of the royal family.

What to Do

A tour of the grounds begins with exploring the palace interiors. Visitors can walk through halls decorated in various styles—from Baroque to early 20th-century Modernism. Of particular note are the Knights' Hall and the rooms furnished by the famous Swedish master Carl Malmsten. Guided tours provide insight into the daily lives of kings and showcase unique art pieces preserved in their original form.

Be sure to visit the Confidencen Theatre—a gem of Swedish Rococo. If your visit coincides with the summer season, you'll have a rare chance to see an opera or ballet performance in authentic 18th-century settings. Even without a show, the building is impressive for its architecture and historical significance as the country's oldest theater.

For nature lovers and those seeking quiet contemplation, the Orangery doors are open, where works by prominent sculptors are displayed among tropical plants. After touring the exhibitions, it's pleasant to walk to Queen Lovisa’s Chapel or simply wander along the lime tree alleys of the park, enjoying views of Edsviken Bay and capturing atmospheric photos against the backdrop of ancient facades.

Getting There

Located in the Solna municipality, this attraction is just 8 kilometers from the center of the Swedish capital. The most convenient way to get there by public transport is to take the commuter train or metro to Solna strand station. From there, you can walk for 15–20 minutes following the signs, or transfer to bus No. 176 or No. 177, which will take you to the Ulriksdals slott stop.

For those who prefer comfort, a taxi ride from Stockholm Central Station takes about 15 minutes. If you are traveling by private car, follow the E4 highway towards Solna; paid parking is provided near the park entrance. During the summer season, there is also the option to arrive by water—pleasure boats cruise across Edsviken Bay, offering guests the chance to enjoy the views from the water.

History & Facts

The architectural ensemble owes its existence to Field Marshal Jacob De la Gardie, at whose request the building was constructed in 1643–1645, originally named Jacobsdal. Later, in 1684, Queen Dowager Hedvig Eleonora purchased the estate and gave it to her newborn grandson Ulrik, after which the residence acquired its current name—Ulriksdal.

Over the centuries, the palace served as a home for many Swedish monarchs, including Charles XIV John and Charles XV. Interestingly, in the mid-19th century, the territory briefly changed its status: it housed a hospital for veterans of the Finnish War. The Invalidkyrkogården cemetery dates back to that period and has become part of the park's historical landscape.

The current appearance of the interiors was largely shaped in 1923, when a large-scale renovation was carried out for King Gustaf VI Adolf. One of the most notable additions was the Knights' Hall, furnished according to designs by the famous designer Carl Malmsten. Today, the palace remains one of the eleven official royal residences of the monarch's family.

Time Needed

When planning a visit, keep in mind that the complex grounds are quite extensive. A quick tour of the main building and a walk through the adjacent garden will take about 1.5–2 hours. However, if you decide to visit the Orangery, the Confidencen Theatre, and take a leisurely stroll along the bay, it's better to set aside half a day.

In the summer months, when the park is especially beautiful, many visitors stay longer, enjoying small picnics or attending cultural events. If your plan includes attending an opera performance or a concert at the court theater, add another 2-3 hours to your total time.

Working Hours

The doors of this royal residence are open to the general public primarily on weekends. You can visit the palace and its main halls on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00. On weekdays (Monday to Friday), the site is usually closed to tourist visits, so it is recommended to check the schedule in advance before your trip.
