In the winter months, a visit to the outdoor ice rink is a must. Located under a large, illuminated canopy, it is a favorite leisure spot for both locals and tourists. Skating in the fresh air, surrounded by modern architecture, is a special highlight of Bossard Arena that is open to everyone.

History & Facts

The history of this modern facility began on August 21, 2010. The new ice arena replaced the old Eishalle Herti stadium, which had served faithfully since 1967 but by the start of the 21st century no longer met modern comfort and safety standards. In place of the old "hockey barn," an architectural masterpiece emerged, designed by Anliker AG and Scheitlin Syfrig Architekten.

\n\n

Interestingly, the decision to build was made by the residents themselves: a referendum was held in the city in 2008, where the majority of citizens voted to allocate funds for the new stadium. The total cost of the project was 65 million Swiss francs. The arena was named after the Bossard Group—a global fastening technology company headquartered right here in Zug.

\n\n

With the opening of Bossard Arena, the popularity of hockey in the region grew significantly—average attendance for EV Zug matches jumped from 4,300 to 6,300 people. In 2015, the stadium even received international recognition, winning an award in the IOC/IAKS competition for sports and leisure facilities. Most recently, in 2024, the arena was expanded to accommodate even more dedicated fans.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to Bossard Arena, consider the nature of the event. If you are heading to a thrilling National League hockey match, we recommend setting aside about 3–4 hours. This is enough time to go through security without rushing, grab a bite at one of the restaurants, and fully immerse yourself in the game's atmosphere.

\n\n

For those planning just to stay active at the outdoor ice rink during the winter season, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This provides plenty of time for a pleasant skate under the illuminated canopy and a break with a hot drink.
