The main highlight of Sizihwan is its stunning sunsets, which are officially considered among the most beautiful on the island. From the shore, you get a magnificent view of the busy port, massive ocean vessels heading into the distance, and the neighboring Cijin Island. The beach sits harmoniously next to the campus of National Sun Yat-sen University, giving the area a special sense of coziness and tranquility not often found in bustling metropolises.

Beyond relaxing on the sand, you can touch history by visiting the Former British Consulate at Takow, located on a nearby hill. This is a place where tropical nature, maritime romance, and cultural heritage merge into one, creating perfect conditions for contemplation and inspiration.

What to Do

The main ritual for every visitor is watching the sunset. The southern end of the beach is considered the best viewpoint: as the sun slowly sinks into the sea, the sky is painted in incredible shades of orange and purple, while the lights of passing fishing boats create a truly magical scene.

For fans of active recreation, Sizihwan offers various water activities. You can try your hand at windsurfing, rent a kayak, or go for a banana boat ride. It is important to remember that regular swimming is often restricted for safety reasons due to current patterns, so the primary focus is on water sports and boat trips.

If you prefer a more relaxed pastime, head for a picnic in Shaochutou coastal park or stroll along shaded paths while admiring exotic plants. Watching the massive container ships and ferries cruising between Gushan and Cijin becomes a fascinating spectacle here. In the evening, you can enjoy a romantic dinner with a view of the illuminated 85-story tower rising above the city.

Getting There

Reaching this scenic spot in the southwest of the city is quite easy. The most convenient way for tourists is to use the metro (KMRT). Take the Orange Line to the terminus, Sizihwan Station (西子灣). The trip from Central Park takes about 20–30 minutes and costs approximately 30 TWD. From the station, you can walk to the beach while enjoying the views or take a local bus.

For those who prefer comfort, a taxi ride from the city center takes about 20 minutes. If you are traveling by rental car, follow National Highway No. 1 to the Zhongshan exit, then take Zhengyi and Dayu Streets to Lianhai Road. Parking is available near the national university and the adjacent park.

An interesting option is taking the ferry from Gushan to Cijin Island and back — this allows you to see the coastline and the port entrance directly from the water, which is especially beautiful during the pre-sunset hours.

History & Facts

The history of this area as an organized recreation zone dates back to the period of Japanese rule. Planning for the resort began in 1916, and the beach was officially opened just a year later. In the 1920s, it came under municipal management, becoming an important leisure center for the residents of the growing port.

In the 1930s, the infrastructure expanded significantly: a children's pool, warm baths based on exhibition pavilions, diving boards, and even bamboo raft rentals were introduced. A major milestone was the opening of the Sizihwan Tunnel in 1928, which directly connected the coast to the Hamasing district, making the path to the sea much shorter and more convenient.

The beach began to take on its modern appearance after 2006. Kaohsiung city authorities conducted a large-scale ecological restoration. To protect the shore from erosion and return it to its natural look, artificial breakwaters were created in the northern and southern parts of the bay. This helped restore the sandy strip and preserve the unique ecosystem of this coastal area.

Time Needed

To simply walk along the shore and take a few vibrant photos, one hour will be enough. However, most travelers prefer to stay here for 2–3 hours, especially toward the evening, to catch the famous golden hour and watch the sun dip below the horizon.

If you plan to combine your beach visit with a trip to the nearby British Consulate or a stroll through the university grounds, we recommend setting aside half a day for this area. This will allow you to enjoy the sea breeze without rushing, sit in one of the coastal cafes, and explore all the interesting corners of Shaochutou Park.

Working Hours

The beach is generally open to visitors daily from 9:00 AM until sunset. Since the area borders an academic campus, visitors are asked to keep noise levels down and leave the recreation area after dark so as not to disturb students and faculty.

Water activities are only available during daylight hours under favorable weather conditions. Before your trip, it is recommended to check the latest information on the official Kaohsiung tourism website, as access hours may change depending on the season or ecological maintenance activities.
