General Weather Overview

Located on the shores of Lake Victoria, Musoma attracts travellers with its mild and comfortable climate, which remains surprisingly stable throughout the year. The weather here can be described as moderately tropical: exhausting heat is rare, and the average air temperature fluctuates in a pleasant range from +23°C to +24°C. Nights bring a slight coolness, but the thermometer almost never drops below +20°C.

Unlike many other regions where seasons change drastically, an eternal summer reigns in this corner of Tanzania. Nevertheless, the year can be conditionally divided into periods with varying probabilities of precipitation. The highest number of rainy days falls during the spring months (especially April) and the end of the year (November and December), when the sky is more often cloudy. The driest and sunniest time is considered the middle of the year — June and July, when the number of overcast days is minimal.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is the absence of sharp temperature changes. Even in the "wettest" months, rains typically do not interfere with relaxation, refreshing the air and maintaining the lush greenery around. Thanks to such a steady temperature regime, you can plan a trip for almost any date, expecting warm weather favourable for walks.

Temperature

The climate in this region is distinguished by amazing stability, so Musoma delights travellers with comfortable warmth all year round. Thanks to its geographical location, there are practically no sharp seasonal changes here, which are characteristic of temperate latitudes. The average air temperature varies smoothly within a very narrow range from +22.8°C to +23.9°C throughout all twelve months, making the city a predictable and pleasant destination to visit in any season.

February can be called the warmest period, when average indicators reach their maximum, and the daytime temperature often rises to +26.6°C. The concept of "winter" is quite relative here: December and July are considered the coolest months, however, even at this time, the air warms up to a comfortable +25°C...+26°C during the day. July's "coolness" manifests mainly at night, when annual minimums of about +20.0°C are recorded.

Daily temperature fluctuations in the city are also minimal, averaging about 5–6 degrees. The difference between daytime warmth and evening freshness is practically not felt as discomfort. There is no exhausting heat during the day, and nights remain soft and warm, rarely cooling below +20°C, which allows tourists to manage with light clothing regardless of the time of day.

Precipitation

The pattern of precipitation in the city of Musoma is determined by its tropical location: it is warm here all year round, so precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain. By analysing weather data, two periods of high humidity can be distinguished. The peak of rainy days falls in April and December, when precipitation can be observed for up to 24 days per month, making these periods the wettest of the year.

A relatively dry season arrives with the coming of summer and lasts until the beginning of autumn. June and July are considered the most favourable months for visiting, when the frequency of rains drops to a minimum (about 8–10 days with precipitation). At this time, the probability of clear weather is significantly higher, although short-term rains are possible even during this period.

The second rainy season begins in October and intensifies towards November, bringing regular precipitation. Travellers planning a visit to Tanzania during the transitional seasons or at the end of the year should be prepared for frequent cloudy weather and definitely take an umbrella or raincoat with them, as rainy days prevail over dry ones at this time.

What to Pack

When packing for Musoma, you should focus on the mild and warm climate that reigns here all year round. During the day, the temperature stays within comfortable limits of +23…+26 °C, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, light shirts, and summer trousers will be appropriate in any season. Be sure to bring comfortable, broken-in shoes for walking, as exploring the surroundings of Lake Victoria is best done on foot.

Particular attention should be paid to protection from moisture, as rainy days happen often here, especially in April, November, and December. Even in the conditionally "dry" months, precipitation is possible, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will become indispensable companions. In addition, in the evenings, the temperature may drop to +20 °C, and a fresh breeze often blows from the lake. To feel cosy after sunset, we recommend using the principle of layering and putting a light cardigan, windbreaker, or hoodie in your suitcase.

Do not forget about basic accessories for travelling around Tanzania. The sun is active here even in cloudy weather, so sunscreen with a high SPF factor, a wide-brimmed hat, and high-quality sunglasses are mandatory. Given the city's proximity to the water, it is worth grabbing a reliable insect repellent, which will be useful during evening promenades by the lake.
