About

In the east of Turkey, in the historical city of Kars, lies one of the region's most impressive military structures — the Caucasus Front War History Museum. It is housed within the walls of the ancient Kanlı Tabya fort, built at the beginning of the 19th century. This site is more than just a collection of exhibits; it is a living testament to resilience and heroism, preserving the spirit of past battles within its rugged stone vaults.

The museum complex covers an impressive area: approximately 1,200 m² is dedicated to indoor galleries inside the restored fortress, while another 7,000 m² serves as an open park zone. A unique feature of this site is that the restorers managed to preserve the original architectural features of the old fort while transforming it into a modern multimedia space. Since 2017, it has been a vital cultural landmark in the city, attracting both history buffs and casual travelers.

One of the main highlights of the museum is the White Wagon, located in the garden. This historical artifact was gifted to Commander Kazım Karabekir in 1921 and served as his personal means of travel between cities. Today, it has become a symbol of the era and a favorite photo spot for visitors. The modern approach to the exhibition and its deep emotional resonance make this museum one of the highest-rated tourist sites in Kars.

What to Do

A visit to the museum offers a deep immersion into the atmosphere of past military life through realistic installations. You can walk along the "Snowy Path" and see the "Snow Installation," which convey the harsh conditions of mountain battles. Inside the fort, scenes of daily life have been recreated: barracks, a kitchen, an infirmary, and an operating room, where silicone figures of soldiers in authentic uniforms create a sense of complete presence.

A special place in the exhibition is held by the "Shahid’s Way" (Martyrs' Way) room, dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers, and archival halls housing letters and documents from the soldiers of the Caucasus Front. For those who enjoy interactive experiences, modern info kiosks are provided, allowing for a detailed study of the biographies of key historical figures such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Kazım Karabekir Pasha.

Be sure to stop by the museum garden to inspect the White Wagon not only from the outside but also from the inside, getting a glimpse into the lifestyle of the high military command in the early 20th century. Furthermore, the fort grounds serve as an excellent observation deck, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Kars, perfect for memorable photos against the backdrop of ancient stones and modern cityscapes.

Getting There

The museum is located in the central part of the city at Örnek, Azat Çk., 36000 Kars Merkez. It is easily recognizable by the massive historic bastion building rising on the hill. If you are in the city center near the main attractions, the walk to the museum will take no more than 15–20 minutes.

For those who prefer public transport, local minibuses known as dolmush regularly run to the Örnek Mahallesi district. The stop is located in the immediate vicinity of the museum complex entrance. You can also use a city taxi; a trip from the railway station or central squares takes about 10 minutes.

If you are traveling in a rental car, there is free parking available within the 7,000 m² museum complex grounds. The drive from Kars Airport is approximately 15 kilometers and takes about 15–20 minutes by car.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1803, when the Yeni Tabya (New Fort) was erected by decree of Sultan Selim III to protect the city's southern borders. This structure was part of a grand defensive system consisting of 46 fortified bastions. The fortress received its current formidable name — Kanlı Tabya ("Bloody Fort") — after the tragic events of 1828, when the entire garrison defending it perished during a night assault.

The Kars forts played a decisive role in defending the empire's eastern borders throughout the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy was the year 1855, when Sultan Abdulmejid established a special Kars Medal for the heroic defense, which was awarded to thousands of the city's defenders. The fort's architecture was meticulously planned: thick walls and a sophisticated system of barracks allowed it to withstand long sieges in harsh climatic conditions.

A new chapter in the history of Kanlı Tabya opened in 2012 when a large-scale restoration began. Five years later, a modern museum dedicated to the history of the Caucasus Front opened its doors. Today, it is not just a military site, but a tribute to the memory of the soldiers whose lives were inextricably linked with these rugged mountains.

Time Needed

To explore all the exhibits at a leisurely pace and soak in the atmosphere of the site, it is recommended to set aside 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. The indoor exhibition, located within the rooms of the old fort, takes about an hour — this is where the main interactive installations and historical artifacts are concentrated.

The remaining time should be spent walking through the museum's outdoor area. Inspecting the famous White Wagon and enjoying the panoramic views of the surroundings will take another 30–40 minutes. If you plan to study the information panels in detail and take commemorative photos, it is best to arrive with extra time in the first half of the day.
