What to Do

First and foremost, it’s worth visiting the contemporary art galleries, where exhibitions change several times a year. Here, you can see works by both emerging talents and world-renowned artists. The spaces are designed to allow you to interact as closely as possible with the objects and installations.

Film lovers should definitely visit the local cinema. Its screens show not only the latest releases but also rare independent films, art-house cinema, and classic world animation. After your screening, stop by the center's design shop—it’s a great place to pick up limited edition prints, art books, and stylish handmade souvenirs.

If you're feeling creative, try signing up for one of the workshops at the print studio. Here, professionals teach techniques such as printmaking, digital art, and photography. You can finish your visit at the cozy café-bar, famous for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious drinks.

History & Facts

The journey toward creating this unique space began in the mid-1980s. The initiative came from the Dundee Printmakers Workshop creative community, which sought to create a modern platform for art college graduates and local artists. Eventually, the project evolved into a large-scale partnership between the city council and the university.

In 1995, the city authorities purchased a former garage building on Nethergate for the future center. The renovation project, designed by Richard Murphy Architects, cost £9 million. The official opening took place on March 19, 1999, and since then, the building has been considered one of the finest examples of 20th-century Scottish architecture.

Over the years, Dundee Contemporary Arts has become a venue for landmark international events. It hosted the first solo exhibition of Olafur Eliasson in the UK, and in 2024, the center was deservedly nominated for the prestigious "Museum of the Year" award by the Art Fund.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to Dundee Contemporary Arts, consider how deeply you want to immerse yourself in the world of art. A typical tour of the current exhibitions in the two main galleries will take about 1–2 hours.

If you decide to complement your cultural program with a film at the cinema, a print workshop, or a leisurely break in the café, it's better to set aside 4–6 hours. This will allow you to fully experience the atmosphere of this place without rushing and enjoying every moment.
