It's a great place for family leisure, where sporting excitement meets a welcoming and friendly environment.

History & Facts

The road to creating this modern venue was long: the owner of the Newcastle Eagles basketball club, Paul Blake, harbored the idea of a home for the team for over ten years. Before this, the "Eagles" were forced to play in rented venues, dreaming of a place that would become the center of the city's sporting life.

Construction, which cost £6.5 million, began in November 2017 with the support of the city council and Sport England. The official opening took place in January 2019, when the stands were filled with fans for the first time, coming to support their favorite team in a match against the Plymouth Raiders.

Originally named the Eagles Community Arena, it received its current name, the Vertu Motors Arena, in 2021 as part of a five-year sponsorship deal. Despite its youth, the arena has already gained expert recognition, winning three Lord Mayor's Design Awards for architectural achievement and social significance to the local community.

Since its opening, the arena has become an important landmark on the map of international basketball. It regularly hosts Great Britain national team qualifying matches for EuroBasket and the World Cup, welcoming teams from Germany, Greece, Serbia, and other countries, highlighting the high level of technical equipment at the venue.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to the Vertu Motors Arena, consider the format of the event. If you are heading to a basketball match or a boxing bout, you should set aside 2 to 4 hours. This time is enough to pass through security, find your seats, enjoy the game, and visit the hospitality areas during breaks.

For participants of business conferences, exhibitions, or short introductory tours, a visit usually takes 1 to 3 hours. If you want to combine a trip to the arena with exploring nearby attractions on the banks of the River Tyne, it's better to allocate half a day for such a walk.
