About

Cobalt Studios is more than just a nightclub; it is the vibrant, pulsing heart of the creative community located in Newcastle upon Tyne. This unique multi-functional space in the United Kingdom brings together art workshops, a concert venue, and an educational center under one roof.

Founded in the industrial district of Shieldfield, this venue has become home to 16 independent artists. The ground floor of the building is a hub of activity, hosting experimental performances, exhibitions, and music sets that are rarely found on the city's commercial stages. Cobalt Studios is renowned for its inclusive approach and its support for bold creative ideas.

The upper floors are dedicated to workspaces where freelancers and creators hold seminars and exchange knowledge. For travelers, this place is primarily interesting for its authentic atmosphere and the chance to experience Newcastle’s cultural life "unfiltered," far from the well-trodden tourist paths.

What to Do

Something interesting is always happening at Cobalt Studios, whether it's a loud concert or a cozy poetry evening. Visitors can catch the Fresh gigs series, which showcases the most promising and experimental performers, or drop by for a club night filled with high-quality electronic music.

The interactive programs known as Learn and Do deserve special attention. These offer a great opportunity not just to be a spectator, but to actively participate in the creative process or discussions. Between events, you can grab a bite and a drink at the local bar, which is famous for its hospitality.

Don't forget to look at the walls — they often serve as a gallery for exhibitions by contemporary artists. The atmosphere here is extremely informal, making it easy to strike up a conversation with locals and learn more about Northern England's contemporary art scene.

Getting There

Cobalt Studios is located in the Shieldfield area, right on the edge of the lively Ouseburn Valley. It is just a couple of kilometers from the city center, making it very easy to reach.

If you prefer public transport, take the Metro to Manors station, from where the studio is a 10–15 minute walk. City buses also run regularly to this area. If you are traveling from central Newcastle upon Tyne, a taxi ride will take only about 5–7 minutes.

For those traveling by car, please note that parking on 10 Boyd Street can be limited, especially in the evening during major events. However, there are several paid parking zones nearby in the Ouseburn valley.

History & Facts

The story of this place began as a personal initiative. Kate Hodgkinson, who moved to Newcastle upon Tyne for her studies, was looking for a space to practice glass work. Together with Mark Collett and a few other like-minded individuals, she decided to create a base for a creative collective at a time when the city was actively striving for cultural capital status.

In its early days, the project occupied only modest premises, but over time it expanded to fill the entire building. Interestingly, the first music parties here were practically underground: the windows were covered with old mattresses for soundproofing to avoid disturbing the neighbors. However, when noise complaints eventually led to a temporary closure, the founders did not give up.

The team launched a major crowdfunding campaign, which successfully raised funds for professional soundproofing, a modern stage, and a kitchen. As a result, Cobalt Studios transformed from a temporary artist haven into one of the most respected independent venues in the United Kingdom.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to Cobalt Studios, you should consider the format of the event. If you are just stopping by to take a look at the current art exhibition or see the residents' work, 1–2 hours will be quite sufficient.

However, people usually visit for atmospheric music nights or educational workshops. In these cases, it is better to set aside 3 to 4 hours to enjoy the live performance, socialize with the local community at the bar, and fully immerse yourself in Newcastle's alternative culture.

Working Hours

Cobalt Studios does not have a strict fixed schedule, as the venue's activity depends entirely on the event calendar. Events most often take place in the evening and night hours, particularly when it comes to concerts or club nights on weekends.

To ensure your visit isn't in vain, we strongly recommend checking the official website or the project's social media before heading out. They always publish the current schedule and the exact door-opening times for each specific event.
