History & Facts

The history of the Newtown Athletic Club began in 1978 when a group of Wall Street businessmen opened the Newtown Racquetball Club. At that time, squash and racquetball were at the peak of their popularity, and the club featured 11 courts. However, by the early 80s, interest in these sports began to fade rapidly, and the establishment was on the verge of survival.

\n\n

The turning point came in 1981 with the arrival of Jim Worthington. Demonstrating entrepreneurial flexibility, he began transforming the empty courts into aerobics studios and modern fitness gyms. This decision not only saved the business but also increased revenue by more than $150,000 in a short period. By the mid-90s, Worthington became the sole owner of the club after buying out his partners.

\n\n

Under his leadership, the complex underwent a massive transformation: the squash courts were completely removed, and an indoor pool and a massive gymnastics hall were added. In 2011, the three-story YouthPlex children's center opened, and in 2013, a luxury outdoor pool complex was added, solidifying the club's status as a world-class elite lifestyle center.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the scale of the Newtown Athletic Club and enjoy its primary amenities, it is recommended to set aside 3 to 5 hours for your visit. This is enough time to work out in the fitness gym, relax in the aquatic zone, and grab a bite at the local cafe.

\n\n

If you are planning a family visit, especially with children, or wish to attend a group class or workshop at the Performance Institute, it is worth planning for a full day. The club's facilities are so diverse that you can easily spend 6–8 hours transitioning from active training to relaxation by the resort-style pool.
