Overview

Located in the picturesque Venezuelan Andes, Merida welcomes travelers with a unique mountain climate often described as "eternal spring." Unlike the country's hot tropical lowlands, this region enjoys a pleasant coolness: the average air temperature is remarkably stable, hovering around 14–16°C throughout the year. This makes the city an ideal destination for those who prefer fresh air and comfortable conditions for walking without the exhausting heat.

There are virtually no distinct seasons with sharp temperature fluctuations here. The weather remains steady and predictable from January to December: during the day, temperatures usually rise to 17–19°C, while nights bring a refreshing crispness as the mercury drops to 10–12°C. Thanks to this consistency, you can plan a trip to Merida at any time of year without worrying about extreme weather surprises.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is the high frequency of precipitation. Although the total volume of rain in millimeters is low, the number of "wet days" per month remains high year-round. This means that instead of heavy tropical downpours, you are more likely to encounter frequent but light drizzle or thick mountain mists that envelope the city, giving the surrounding landscapes a special mystical atmosphere.

Temperature

The main characteristic of the local temperature regime is its exceptional stability. The monthly average temperature chart looks almost like a straight line: the fluctuation between the coolest month (January) and the warmest (May) is less than 2°C. This predictability allows tourists to avoid worrying about seasonality when planning their trip dates, as the thermal background remains constant year-round.

It is much more important to consider the daily temperature range, which is felt more strongly in Merida than the change of seasons. In the middle of the day, the air usually warms up to comfortable highs of 18–19°C; however, it becomes noticeably cooler immediately after sunset. Nighttime temperatures consistently drop to 10–12°C, so the feeling of mild warmth is quickly replaced by a bracing chill.

Due to this contrast, travelers are recommended to dress in layers. While light clothing is sufficient for midday strolls, a warm layer—such as a thick sweater, fleece jacket, or light coat—is essential for a comfortable evening or early morning.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Merida has a rather specific character: despite a very high frequency of rainy days, the total volume remains surprisingly low. Statistics show that wet days are a constant occurrence year-round, ranging from 25 to 31 days per month. This indicates that instead of prolonged tropical downpours, the city is more often shrouded in light drizzle, fog, or short-lived showers, which is quite typical for the Andean mountain climate.

There is no pronounced dry season in the traditional sense, as the probability of precipitation is high at any time of year. However, small fluctuations in intensity can be noted. The "wettest" months in terms of water volume are April (11 mm) and November (10 mm). In contrast, the beginning of the year, especially January and February, is characterized by minimum levels of accumulated rainfall (about 4-6 mm), although the sky often remains cloudy.

Travelers should be prepared for the fact that an umbrella or light raincoat might be needed on almost any day. Even during the months with the least precipitation, at least 25-26 wet days are recorded. However, given the low volume of water and comfortable temperatures, such weather rarely hinders sightseeing, instead creating an atmospheric and fresh environment.

Packing Tips

Merida's climate is often called "eternal spring," so when packing your suitcase, you should prepare for cool and fresh weather. Since the temperature remains remarkably stable throughout the year, rarely exceeding +19°C during the day and dropping to +10°C at night, layering should be the main principle of your wardrobe. Your luggage should primarily consist of jeans or thick trousers, long-sleeved tops, fleece jackets, and sweaters. A light but warm jacket or windbreaker is essential for comfortable walks, especially in the morning and evening hours.

Pay special attention to moisture protection, as rain and fog are almost daily occurrences in this region, regardless of the month. Be sure to bring a high-quality raincoat, a waterproof windbreaker with a hood, or a compact umbrella. Your footwear should be comfortable, closed-toe, and preferably waterproof: trekking boots or sneakers with non-slip soles are ideal for walking on cobblestones and mountain trails. Also, don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun can be quite strong in the high altitudes even in cloudy weather.
