General Weather Overview

The city of Ca Mau, located in Vietnam, is characterised by a typical tropical monsoon climate. Temperatures here remain high and fairly stable throughout the year, with monthly averages ranging from 26.5°C in December to 29.4°C in April. Daytime highs often exceed 30°C, while nighttime lows rarely drop below 23°C, creating consistently warm and humid conditions.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguished in Ca Mau's climate: dry and wet. The dry season usually lasts from December to April. During this period, rainfall is minimal, especially from January to March (1-2 mm), and the number of rainy days is low. The wet season, or rainy season, begins around May and continues until November. These months see a significant increase in precipitation, peaking in September and October (about 13 mm), and practically daily rains, especially from July to October, when the number of "wet" days reaches 29-30 per month.

Thus, when planning a trip to Ca Mau, expect hot weather year-round. The timing of your visit will depend on your tolerance for rain: the drier and sunnier months fall in winter and early spring, while summer and autumn are characterised by abundant rainfall.

Temperature

Ca Mau experiences a tropical climate with fairly stable high temperatures throughout the year. The average annual temperature fluctuates slightly, remaining in the range of 26.5°C to 29.4°C. The hottest month is usually April, when the average temperature reaches 29.4°C, and daytime highs can rise to 32.9°C. The "coolest" months are considered December and January with an average temperature of about 26.5°C - 26.9°C and minimum nighttime temperatures dropping to an average of 23.5°C.

The period from March to October is characterised by hot weather. Especially from May to October, when the highest amount of precipitation and rainy days is observed, the weather becomes very humid, which intensifies the feeling of heat. Daytime temperatures at this time often exceed 30°C. The season from November to February brings drier and slightly less hot weather, which can be described as very warm and comfortable. Moderate temperature fluctuations between day and night are observed throughout the year, usually ranging from 5°C to 8°C. The greatest difference is often recorded in March (about 8°C), and the smallest – at the height of the wet season, for example, in July (about 5°C).

Precipitation

The city of Ca Mau sees a clear division into wet and dry seasons during the year, with all precipitation falling as rain, as temperatures remain high year-round. Snow is not characteristic of this region.

The rainy season in Ca Mau usually lasts from May to November. Peak rainfall occurs in September and October, when the monthly average reaches 13 mm. During these months, as well as in July and August, it rains very frequently. For instance, in July, August, and October, about 30 rainy days are recorded, indicating almost daily precipitation. May and November are also quite wet, with 29 and 25 rainy days respectively, and rainfall amounts of 8-9 mm.

The dry season in Ca Mau falls between January and March. The driest months are February and March, when only 1 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days is minimal – about 5-7 days per month. December (4 mm of precipitation, 14 rainy days) and April (5 mm of precipitation, 18 rainy days) can be considered transitional months between the dry and wet seasons.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Ca Mau, it is important to consider its hot and humid tropical climate, which persists throughout the year. The average annual temperature hovers around 27-29°C. The foundation of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring high SPF sunscreen, headwear (a hat or cap), and sunglasses to protect against the intense sun. Comfortable walking shoes, such as sandals or light trainers, are also essential, as you will likely be walking a lot around the city and its surroundings.

Ca Mau has two clearly defined seasons, which is important to consider when packing your suitcase. The rainy season lasts roughly from May to November. Peak rainfall, reaching 13 mm per month, occurs in September and October. During these months, as well as in July and August, the number of rainy days is particularly high – up to 29-30 days per month. During this period, you will certainly need a light raincoat or waterproof jacket, as well as a compact umbrella. Quick-drying clothes will also be very handy. From January to March comes the drier season with minimal rainfall (1-2 mm per month) and only 5-9 rainy days, yet temperatures remain high. Even in the dry season, a light cardigan or wrap may be useful for evening walks or visiting air-conditioned places.

Regardless of the time of year, do not forget insect repellent, especially if you plan to spend time in nature or near bodies of water, particularly in the evening. Although the principle of layering is less relevant here due to consistently high temperatures, having a light cover-up is always useful for sun protection or evening coolness, which may be felt after the daytime heat, especially from December to February when minimum temperatures drop to 23.5°C.
