Current Weather

Planning a trip to Bac Lieu? In this section, you'll find the most up-to-date weather information for this colorful corner of Vietnam, including detailed charts and forecasts for the coming days.

Overview

Bac Lieu, located in the picturesque Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam, features a tropical monsoon climate. It enjoys perpetual summer with high humidity, and the weather is clearly divided into two seasons: dry and wet. Unlike the northern regions of the country, temperatures here remain consistently high year-round, without any sharp cold spells.

The dry season lasts from November to April, offering tourists plenty of sunny days and comfortable conditions for sightseeing. The wet season, brought by the southeast monsoon, spans the months from May to October. During this time, the delta's nature is transformed, becoming lush and green, while the average annual temperature stays steady between 26–27 °C, making the region attractive to visit at any time of year.

Temperature

The temperature range in Bac Lieu is remarkably consistent due to its proximity to the equator. The average annual temperature here is about +27 °C, comparable to the climate of Ho Chi Minh City. The hottest months are April and May—during this period, daytime highs reach +32–33 °C, and nights remain very warm (+26 °C).

The "coolest" period occurs in December and January, though even then, daytime temperatures in southern Vietnam rarely drop below +28 °C, while at night the thermometer stays around +23 °C. Daily temperature fluctuations are moderate, allowing travelers to feel comfortable throughout the day.

Those who enjoy the sea will be pleased to know that the water in coastal areas is warm year-round. In the dry season, the water temperature is about +28–29 °C, and during the monsoon period, it can warm up to +30–31 °C. The optimal time for water activities is from November to April, when the sea is calmest and the lack of frequent rain makes swimming most enjoyable.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Bac Lieu is unevenly distributed and directly depends on monsoon patterns. The bulk of the rain falls between May and October. During these months, humidity reaches 80–85%, and tropical downpours become a regular occurrence. The rainiest months are September and October, when rainfall can exceed 300 mm per month and the number of wet days reaches 28–30.

The nature of rainfall in this part of Vietnam is typical for the tropics: intense but often brief showers that quickly give way to sunshine. Dry season begins in November and lasts until April. February and March are the driest months, with less than 20 mm of precipitation, and clear weather dominates most of the time.

The total annual rainfall is about 1500–2000 mm. There is no snow in the region, and transitional months like April and May may bring light cloud cover and occasional morning rain, which only serves to refresh the air before the midday heat.

Packing Tips

When packing for Bac Lieu during the dry season (November–April), prioritize lightweight cotton clothing, shorts, and T-shirts. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and SPF 50+ sunscreen, as the tropical sun in southern Vietnam is very intense. For exploring nature parks, comfortable open-toed shoes are useful, while a standard swim set is essential for the beach.

During the rainy season (May–October), you should supplement your wardrobe with quick-drying clothes and a light raincoat. Humidity increases significantly, so it’s helpful to carry insect repellent and waterproof cases for your gadgets. Regardless of the season, for evening walks (when the temperature is around +25 °C) and temple visits, light trousers and long-sleeved shirts are recommended to protect against both insects and the sun.
