General Weather Overview

The climate in Haiphong, Vietnam, can be described as humid subtropical, with significant monsoon influence. The city enjoys warm weather throughout most of the year, with average monthly temperatures ranging from a pleasant 17.5°C in January to a hot 30.2°C in June. This means that even in the "coolest" months, the weather remains mild enough for a comfortable stay.

There are two distinct seasons in Haiphong: a dry and cool winter season, and a hot, humid summer season. Winter, lasting approximately from December to March, is characterized by lower temperatures and minimal rainfall (only 1 mm per month). Summer, from May to September, brings high temperatures and a significant increase in rainfall, peaking in August (13 mm) and the highest number of rainy days (up to 27 days in August). This period corresponds to the rainy season.

Therefore, when planning a trip to Haiphong, it is worth considering these seasonal variations. If you prefer drier and cooler weather, the best time to visit is from November to April. For those who do not mind the heat and high humidity, the summer months can also be attractive, but be prepared for frequent, though often short-lived, tropical downpours.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Haiphong is characterized by warmth throughout the year, with distinct seasonal fluctuations. The annual range of average temperatures extends from 17.5°C in January, which is the coolest month, to 30.2°C in June, when the peak of summer heat is observed. Minimum night-time temperatures in January can drop to an average of 14.8°C, while daytime highs reach 20.2°C. In the hottest month, June, average minimum temperatures are 27.6°C, and maximums can rise to 32.8°C.

The summer months in Haiphong, covering the period from May to September, are distinguished by hot and humid weather. Daily average temperatures during this time confidently stay above 28°C, and daytime highs often exceed 30-32°C, especially in June and July. High humidity, accompanied by a significant number of rainy days, makes the heat feel more intense. The winter period, which falls on December, January, and February, brings cooler and comparatively dry weather to Haiphong. Average temperatures during these months range from 17.5°C to 18.9°C. Nights can be quite fresh, with temperatures around 14.6°C - 16.1°C, while during the day the air warms up to a comfortable 20°C - 22°C. Frosts are not characteristic for this region.

The transitional seasons – spring (March, April) and autumn (October, November) – show a gradual change in temperature indicators. In March, the average temperature is already 22.3°C, and by April it rises to 25.3°C. In autumn, in October, the average temperature drops to 25.0°C, and in November – to 22.8°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in Haiphong can be called moderate: the difference between average monthly minimum and maximum temperatures is usually about 5-6.5°C. This means that even on the hottest days, evenings and nights bring some relief, and in winter, daytime warmth is noticeably different from the morning and night chill.

Precipitation

In Haiphong, there is a clearly defined seasonality of precipitation, characteristic of the region's monsoon climate. The year can be divided into two main periods: a wet season with heavy rains and a dry season when precipitation becomes significantly rarer. Understanding these features will help you better prepare for your trip to Haiphong.

The rainy season in Haiphong usually lasts from May to September. During this period, the amount of rainfall increases noticeably, reaching its peak in August, when an average of about 13 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days can reach up to 27. July (9 mm, 23 rainy days) and September (10 mm, 23 rainy days) are also months with a high probability of rain. The nature of precipitation at this time is predominantly downpours, which can be heavy but often short-lived.

The dry season falls on the period from December to April. During these months, the amount of precipitation is minimal. December, January, February, and March are considered particularly dry, with average monthly precipitation of only about 1 mm. December also stands out for the lowest number of rainy days – only about 5. At this time, if precipitation occurs, it is usually insignificant and brief. November (2 mm, 8 rainy days) and April (2 mm, 13 rainy days) can be considered transitional months, when the probability of rain is slightly higher than at the peak of the dry season, but significantly lower than in the rainy season.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Haiphong, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. During the hot and humid months, which usually last from May to September, give preference to light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, and open shoes will become your best companions. Given the high probability of precipitation during this period, especially from June to August when the number of rainy days reaches its maximum, do not forget to bring a compact umbrella or a light waterproof jacket. Powerful sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are also mandatory for protection against the intense sun.

If your trip falls during the cooler and drier season, from December to March, then you will need a slightly different set of items. Although daytime temperatures remain pleasant, evenings and early mornings can be quite fresh, with an average temperature of around 17-19°C. Therefore, it is worth bringing a light jacket, a sweater, or a fleece pullover, as well as closed shoes. The principle of layering in clothing will be very useful here: for example, a T-shirt, a long-sleeved shirt over it, and a light jacket will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Despite the lower amount of rainfall, a small folding umbrella may still come in handy in case of rare rain, especially in March, when the number of rainy days increases slightly.

In transitional months such as April, October, and November, the weather can be changeable, so a combination of light summer clothes with a few warm items will be the optimal solution. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as Haiphong and its surroundings are perfect for walking. Do not forget insect repellent, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors during warm and humid periods. Overall, a well-thought-out wardrobe will allow you to enjoy your trip to Haiphong at any time of the year.
