Thien An Monastery

About

Hidden in the shade of evergreen pines, Thien An Monastery is a stunning example of harmony between European spiritual tradition and Asian aesthetics. This active Catholic monastery of the Benedictine order, founded in 1940, is located atop the hill of the same name on the outskirts of Hue. The site is often called "Little Da Lat" for its mild microclimate and serene atmosphere.

The monastery's main feature is its unique architecture. Here, austere Gothic elements, typical of Catholic churches, are organically intertwined with traditional Vietnamese motifs. You will see classical triple-entrance Tam Quan gates, roofs covered with yin-yang tiles, and decorative dragon figures that peacefully coexist with statues of Christian saints. The surrounding pine forest, planted by the monks themselves, and the calm waters of Thuy Tien Lake create ideal conditions for solitude.

It is not just a religious site, but a true spiritual sanctuary that attracts travelers seeking peace away from the busy tourist routes of Vietnam. Thien An Monastery is rightfully considered one of the most romantic and photogenic places in the region, offering guests a rare opportunity to see how different cultures can complement each other, creating something beautiful.

What to Do

The first thing to do upon arrival is take a leisurely stroll through the grounds. Your attention will surely be drawn to the seven-story tower, which resembles the famous Thien Mu Pagoda but carries a different meaning. Examine the facade of the main chapel, where elegant Gothic arches sit alongside Chinese characters and dragon figures. Inside the temple, a solemn yet inspiring atmosphere prevails, perfect for meditation and quiet prayer.

Be sure to set aside time for a walk in the monastery garden. Here, among decorative plants and ancient trees, you can find the so-called "frames of happiness"—railing elements with Chinese characters that have become a favorite spot for commemorative photos. The air, filled with the scent of pine resin, makes the walk not only pleasant but also beneficial for your health.

If you walk a little further along the paths, you will reach the shores of Thuy Tien Lake. This picturesque spot is perfect for a short break in nature or simply to admire the reflection of forested hills in the mirror-like water. Many visitors note that it is here, in the silence of the pine forest, that the spirit of old Hue is best felt.

Getting There

The monastery is located approximately 10 kilometers from the center of Hue, on a picturesque hilltop. The easiest way to get here is by taxi or a rented motorbike. The journey takes about 20–30 minutes and follows a high-quality paved road that winds through a cool pine forest, gradually climbing upwards.

If you prefer active recreation, you can reach it by bicycle, though you should account for a slight incline. The route leads towards the Huong Thuy district; you can use the coordinates (107.582613, 16.4111391) for navigation. The journey itself is part of the adventure: the fresh forest air and beautiful views set a peaceful mood even before you reach the monastery gates.

Public transport in this direction is limited, so for a comfortable trip, it is better to rely on private transport or ride-hailing apps. A small parking area is provided near the entrance.

History & Facts

The history of this peaceful place began in 1940, when two French priests—Dom Romain Guillaume and Dom Corentin Collin—decided to found a Benedictine monastery. Initially, the order planned to settle in Da Lat, but they ultimately chose Thien An Hill, as its landscapes reminded the French monks of their homeland.

The early years were a time of severe trials and creation. From 1940 to 1943, the monks lived in a modest thatched cottage, actively working to transform the environment. It was thanks to their labor that the dense pine forest appeared on the hill and Thuy Tien Lake was dug, both of which are now considered an integral part of the Hue landscape.

In 1943, the construction of the first stone chapel and residential wing was completed. The monastery continued to expand, becoming an important spiritual and agricultural center: the monks were self-sufficient, engaging in farming and animal husbandry. Despite subsequent renovations, the architectural appearance of the monastery has retained its unique eclecticism, remaining an important monument to the presence of the Catholic order in Vietnam.

Time Needed

To explore the monastery and its surroundings at a leisurely pace, we recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours. This is sufficient time to enjoy the forest road, study the architectural details of the chapel and tower, and take a walk to the lakes.

If you plan to have a small picnic in the pine forest or engage in dedicated photography, it is worth allowing half a day for the visit. A morning walk here is particularly pleasant, as the air remains cool and the soft light perfectly highlights the beauty of the monastery garden.

Working Hours

Thien An Monastery is open to visitors daily. Guests are welcomed throughout the week, including weekends and holidays. Opening hours: from 06:00 to 18:00.

For a deeper immersion into the atmosphere of the cloister, it is recommended to visit during the morning hours, when it is particularly quiet and the air is at its freshest. Please remember that this is an active religious site, so before visiting, it is worth checking the official website for any special ceremonies or changes in the schedule.
