Museo "Arq. Francisco Tamburini" | Banco de la Provincia de Córdoba S.A.

About

Step into the heart of financial and architectural history, carefully preserved by Córdoba. The Francisco Tamburini Museum is more than just a collection of banking artifacts; it is a true architectural masterpiece located in the historic Casa Matriz building of the Bank of the Province of Córdoba. Built in 1889, this building was one of the first in Latin America designed specifically for a major financial institution.

The museum's interiors are striking in their splendor, reminiscent of European palaces like Versailles. Visitors are greeted by magnificent stained-glass windows, delicate plasterwork, and monumental murals by artist Arturo Nembrini Gonzaga. The entire eclectic ensemble was intended to showcase the prestige and economic power that Argentina held at the end of the 19th century.

Today, the museum, named after its creator — the famous Italian architect Francisco Tamburini — is a National Historic Landmark. It houses unique collections of numismatics, medals, and valuable archival documents that tell the story of the region’s development through the lens of banking.

What to Do

Once inside, the first thing to notice is the architecture itself: the impressive stained-glass ceiling of the central hall and the rich plasterwork that creates the atmosphere of an aristocratic palace. History buffs will appreciate the numismatic collection, featuring rare coins and medals, as well as the collection of vintage banking instruments and documents telling the story of the province's economic heyday.

The museum is an active cultural venue, frequently hosting temporary contemporary art exhibitions. Of particular interest is the Painting Prize (Premio de Pintura) organized by the bank, with winning works displayed in the gallery space. Educational workshops and themed events, such as the popular "Night of Museums," are held regularly.

For a deeper experience, we recommend taking a guided tour — these tours reveal the symbolic meaning of decorative elements and tell more about the life of Francisco Tamburini. This location offers a unique contrast: part of the building still functions as a bank, allowing guests to feel a living connection between the city's majestic past and dynamic present.

Getting There

The museum is located in the very heart of the historical center, at San Jerónimo 166. Its location is ideal — right across from the famous Plaza San Martín. If you are already walking around the center, it is easy to reach the building on foot from the main attractions.

For those who prefer public transport, numerous bus routes pass through the city center, such as lines 1, 2, and 7. Stops are located in the immediate vicinity of the square. If you are coming from the bus station (Terminal de Ómnibus), the walk takes about 15–20 minutes, or you can take a short bus ride.

Travelers arriving from Ingeniero Aeronáutico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport (COR) will find it most convenient to take a taxi — the trip takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Specialized Yutsa buses also transport passengers to the central districts. Note that parking in the center is limited, so walking or using the Ecobici city bikes are excellent alternatives to a car.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the region's economic development. The Bank of the Province of Córdoba began its operations back in 1873, but the decision to build such a monumental headquarters was made later, in 1887. The project was entrusted to the outstanding Italian architect Francisco Tamburini, after whom the museum is named. Tamburini was a star of his time: he also worked on the Teatro Colón and the expansion of the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires.

The construction took only two years and was completed in 1889. The architectural style reflected the ambitions of the local elite in the late 19th century — an eclectic masterpiece inspired by European classics. The interior decoration by artist Arturo Nembrini Gonzaga emphasized the power and prestige of the financial institution, becoming a symbol of Argentina's economic progress during that period.

The museum and the bank's archives were officially founded in 1972 to preserve the accumulated cultural and documentary heritage. In 1993, the building was declared a provincial landmark, and in 2000, it received the status of a National Historic Landmark. In 2024, the museum celebrated its 135th anniversary, completing a major restoration of its decorative murals, which returned the interiors to their original splendor.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the magnificent interiors of the Casa Matriz and see the main museum exhibits, most visitors need about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to take in the details of the plasterwork, admire the stained glass, and study the numismatic collection.

If you plan to join a guided tour or want to study the archival documents and temporary art exhibitions in more detail, your visit may take a bit longer. In any case, a visit won't take up the whole day, making it easy to fit into a busy tourist itinerary through the city center.

The museum welcomes guests on weekdays, following standard banking hours. You can visit the exhibitions from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The museum is usually closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
