The castle's medieval appearance impresses with its rugged impregnability: massive walls, narrow arrow slits, and crenelated towers create the image of a formidable guardian protecting the approaches to the capital. All of Austria takes pride in this historical site, which today functions as a museum, opening its doors to the world of knighthood and centuries-old traditions.

Inside, guests can expect to be immersed in an authentic atmosphere. Although the castle has undergone many transformations, its 19th-century interiors and preserved elements of ancient masonry allow visitors to feel the spirit of bygone eras. It is not just a historical building, but a living symbol of the ruling family, inextricably linked to European history.

What to Do

Once inside the fortress walls, you will be transported several centuries back in time. Accompanied by a guide, visitors pass through historical halls where every piece of furniture and decor tells the story of the daily life of medieval nobility. Be sure to look into the Great Hall with its monumental beamed ceilings: it houses an interesting collection of ancient weapons and authentic household items from the century before last.

The true gem of the castle is the St. Pancratius Chapel, built in the early 12th century. This place is steeped in peace and tranquility; it is still used for solemn services and weddings. The chapel's main treasure is a rare depiction of Christ’s Crucifixion, rendered in red chalk in the 13th century, which has miraculously survived to this day.

End your tour on the east balcony. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the forests and the suburbs of the Austrian capital. Looking at the powerful walls, built directly onto the rock and decorated with an intricate stone frieze, you begin to truly appreciate the craftsmanship of the ancient builders.

Getting There

This majestic architectural monument is located in the town of Maria Enzersdorf, just a few kilometers south of the Austrian capital. Thanks to its location on the edge of the famous Vienna Woods, a trip here turns into a pleasant countryside excursion.

The most convenient way to get there is by private or rented car, following the navigator to Am Hausberg 2. You can also use taxi services directly from the city center or from the nearest metro stations, ensuring maximum comfort on your journey.

For those who prefer public transport, suburban trains and buses run from the central part of the metropolis. Since the castle is located in the suburban zone, the journey doesn't take much time, allowing you to easily combine a tour of the fortress with other plans for the day.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to 1130. It was then that Hugo von Liechtenstein, founder of the famous princely dynasty, laid the first stone of the fortress's foundation. Originally, the structure was built as a powerful defensive fortification on a strategically important geological line that runs through the territory of the modern-day Czech Republic. The family used the castle as their primary residence until the end of the 13th century.

The fortress has faced a challenging path: it was twice significantly damaged during the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1529 and 1683, the castle walls were heavily impacted, and only the deep dungeons, wall fragments, and the old Romanesque chapel survived from its original medieval appearance. The building remained in ruins for a long time until Prince Johann Josef I bought back the ancestral estate in the early 19th century.

A large-scale reconstruction, begun in 1884, lasted nearly two decades. Architects sought to restore the "medieval romanticism" of the building, adding new floors and creating halls in the historical style. The local residents of Maria Enzersdorf also contributed to the preservation of the monument, helping to restore the castle after damage sustained in the mid-20th century. Today, the site is managed by the Prince of Liechtenstein Foundation.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the hidden corners of this medieval fortress, it is recommended to set aside about 2–3 hours. This is sufficient time to participate in a guided tour, thoughtfully examine the interiors, and visit the ancient chapel.

Don't forget to leave some time for the east balcony. The panoramic views of the surroundings deserve special attention and, of course, several beautiful photos to remember your visit. If you plan to walk through the adjacent territory of the Vienna Woods, you should increase the total duration of your visit.

Working Hours

When planning your trip to the castle, it's worth considering its specific opening schedule. Currently, the fortress gates are open to tourists only on weekends and at the end of the week: on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 to 15:00.

On other days (Monday through Thursday), the site is usually closed to visitors. As the schedule may change depending on the season or private events of the princely family, we strongly recommend checking current information on the official website before you head out.
