General Weather Overview

The climate in Guyuan can be characterized as temperate continental with distinct seasons. This region of China is characterized by quite cold, dry winters and mild, comfortable summers. Thanks to its geographical location, extreme heat is rare here, making the city an attractive destination for those who prefer coolness to the scorching sun.

The summer period, from June to August, is considered the most favourable time for a visit: the average temperature stays around +18...+20°C, and daily highs rarely exceed +25°C. The peak humidity occurs in summer: the number of rainy days increases, reaching a maximum in July and August, although the total volume of precipitation remains moderate.

Winter in Guyuan is frosty with little snow. Temperatures in January and February consistently stay below zero, sometimes dropping to -11°C at night. There is practically no precipitation in the winter months, so the weather is predominantly clear but requires warm clothing.

Temperature

The climate in Guyuan is characterized by distinct seasonality with a rather harsh winter and a moderately warm summer. The coldest period of the year is January, when the average temperature drops to -5.7°C, and night frosts can reach -11.1°C. In the winter months, from December to February, the thermometer rarely rises above zero even during daylight hours, so travellers should be prepared for freezing weather.

Summer here, on the contrary, is very comfortable and ideal for those who do not like exhausting heat. July is considered the warmest month with an average temperature of about 20.1°C. During the day, the air warms up to a pleasant 25.2°C, creating excellent conditions for sightseeing and nature walks. Even in August, mild warmth remains before the gradual autumn cooling begins.

An important feature of the region's temperature regime is noticeable diurnal fluctuations. The difference between day and night readings can be significant, especially in the transitional seasons — spring and autumn. For example, in April, the daytime temperature can reach 14.6°C, while at night it drops to 2.9°C. Given this feature, tourists are recommended to dress in layers to feel comfortable at any time of day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Guyuan is distributed unevenly throughout the year, forming clearly defined wet and dry seasons. The rainiest period falls in summer and early autumn: July, August, and September are the leaders in precipitation frequency. In these months, 11 to 12 rainy days are recorded, however, the total volume of moisture remains comparatively small, which is typical for the climate of this region.

In winter, the weather becomes significantly drier. The "driest" months are December and January, when precipitation falls extremely rarely, only 2–3 days a month. Considering that the average temperature at this time drops below zero (to -5...-10°C), one should expect snow instead of rain. Snowfalls are usually not too heavy but create a winter atmosphere.

Spring marks a gradual increase in humidity: by April, the number of days with precipitation increases to nine. In general, prolonged tropical downpours are not typical for Guyuan; precipitation here falls more often in the form of short-term rains in summer or light snow in winter, which makes travel comfortable for most of the year.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Guyuan during the winter period, be sure to prepare for the cold: the average temperature in January and February stays below zero, and at night it drops to -11°C. You will need high-quality thermal underwear, warm woollen sweaters, a thick down jacket, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves. Since winter here is dry, it is worth bringing moisturising cream and lip balm to protect your skin from the wind and low temperatures.

Summer in this region is quite mild and comfortable, and there is usually no exhausting heat: in July and August, the thermometer rises to +23...25°C during the day. However, evenings remain cool (around +15°C), so even on a warm trip, you should bring a light jacket, windbreaker, or hoodie. Given that the number of rainy days increases in summer (up to 11-12 days per month), a compact umbrella or raincoat will become an important part of your luggage.

At any time of year, for travelling around China, it is best to choose comfortable, broken-in flat shoes suitable for long walks. In spring and autumn, the weather is changeable, so the most sensible decision would be to dress in layers to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Also, do not forget sunglasses, as the sun can be strong even in cool weather.
