Baiyin

Current Weather

Planning a visit to Baiyin? In this section, you'll find the most up-to-date information on current weather conditions and detailed forecasts for this part of China.

Overview

The climate in Baiyin is distinctly continental, a result of its location in Gansu Province at an altitude of about 1,500–1,600 meters above sea level. Travelers in China should be prepared for notable seasonal contrasts, ranging from hot and humid summers to truly freezing, snowy winters. The high altitude amplifies daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations, making the local atmosphere dynamic and ever-changing.

All four seasons here are very clearly defined. Summer in the city lasts from June to August, characterized by peak temperatures and the highest humidity. Winter brings steady frosts and dry air, while the transitional periods—spring and autumn—pass by quite quickly and are often accompanied by stronger winds. For a comfortable sightseeing experience, it is best to choose late spring or early autumn, when the weather is mild and free from extreme temperatures.

Temperature

The temperature range in Baiyin is quite striking: throughout the year, the thermometer can fluctuate from -11°C in the depths of winter to +30°C and above at the height of summer. January and February remain the coldest months, when nighttime frosts bring the city to a standstill and daytime temperatures only rarely climb above freezing. During this time, dry and piercing air dominates this part of China.

With the arrival of summer, the situation changes dramatically. In July and August, daytime highs often reach +30–35°C, although the nighttime coolness brings long-awaited relief, dropping to a comfortable +15–16°C. Due to the continental climate, daily temperature fluctuations in the city can reach an impressive 15–20 degrees. This means that even during the hottest time of year, an evening walk may require long sleeves, as the air cools down very quickly after sunset.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Baiyin is unevenly distributed, forming a distinct wet season during the summer months. The bulk of the rain occurs in July and August, when frequent thunderstorms sweep across the city. During this period, up to 80 mm of rain falls per month, accounting for a significant portion of the annual average. Thanks to its location in a mountainous part of China, flooding is rare here, though humidity is noticeably higher than during the rest of the year.

In contrast, the winter period is characterized by dryness and moderate snowfall. Snow cover usually lasts for 2–3 months, creating a picturesque backdrop for winter getaways. February and March are considered the driest months, when precipitation is minimal and the sky often remains clear and cloudless. On average, there are about 100–150 days with precipitation per year, including light drizzle and winter snow.

Packing Tips

When packing for Baiyin, follow the principle of layering, which is essential here year-round. For a summer trip to China, opt for light clothing made from natural fabrics, but be sure to pack a windbreaker for cool evenings and a high-quality sunscreen with SPF 30+. The high-altitude sun can be deceptive even in moderate temperatures. Don't forget a compact umbrella or raincoat in case of sudden thundershowers.

A winter wardrobe should be as functional as possible: a warm down jacket, thermal underwear, and woolen accessories (hat, scarf, gloves) are the absolute minimum to protect against the biting wind. In Gansu Province, spring can often be dusty, so a light scarf or mask may come in handy during long walks. Comfortable shoes with non-slip soles are key for winter comfort, while light trekking sneakers are ideal for exploring the surrounding landscapes during the warmer seasons.
