Overview

The climate in Tianshui features four distinct seasons, allowing travelers to choose the most comfortable time for their visit. Overall, the weather is temperate continental: you can expect cold and mostly dry winters, along with warm summers when the highest, though still modest, amount of precipitation occurs.

Winter (December–February) in Tianshui is quite frosty, with average temperatures hovering around 0°C and often dropping lower, and very little precipitation—in fact, December and January are the driest months. Spring (March–May) brings a noticeable warming: while the average temperature in March is around +7°C, by May the air warms up to a comfortable +15°C. Summer (June–August) is the warmest time of year, with average temperatures staying around +20°C to +22°C. It is during this period, especially in July and August, that the maximum number of rainy days (about 13 per month) and the highest amount of rainfall are observed, although the volume still remains moderate (up to 4 mm). Autumn (September–November) is characterized by a gradual cooling and a decrease in precipitation, creating pleasant conditions for walking before winter sets in.

Temperature

The annual temperature range in Tianshui shows significant variations typical of a continental climate. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to -2.2°C, and nighttime lows can reach -6.5°C. Daytime highs in January barely exceed +2.1°C. Conversely, July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of +22.0°C. During this period, daytime heat can reach +26.6°C, while nights remain warm with temperatures around +17.3°C. Thus, the annual range of average monthly temperatures is over 24 degrees Celsius.

Summer months in Tianshui, from June to August, are characterized by warm and occasionally hot weather. In June, the average temperature is +19.5°C, with daytime highs around +24.5°C and nighttime lows around +14.5°C. July, as mentioned, is the warmest, while in August, the temperature drops slightly to an average of +21.3°C (maximum +25.7°C, minimum +16.8°C). Summer days are pleasant for outdoor activities, although you should be prepared for rising temperatures during the day, especially in July.

Winter in Tianshui, covering December, January, and February, brings frosty weather. In December, the average temperature stays at -1.6°C, with nighttime frosts down to -6.1°C and daytime temperatures around +2.8°C. January is the peak of the cold season. February brings some relief: the average temperature rises to +0.4°C, although nights are still cold (-4.6°C), and daytime air warms up to +5.3°C. Tianshui is characterized by noticeable daily temperature fluctuations throughout the year: the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows often ranges from 8 to 11°C, which is especially felt during the spring months.

Precipitation

Tianshui experiences a clearly defined seasonality in precipitation distribution. Winter, particularly December and January, is the driest time of year, with precipitation levels approaching zero (0 mm). These months also record the fewest days with precipitation—ranging from 4 to 6. Given the negative average temperatures in January (-2.2°C) and December (-1.6°C), any rare precipitation during this time is likely to be in the form of light snow or frost, but the volume is extremely low.

A gradual increase in precipitation begins in the spring. March and February see only about 1 mm each, with 7–9 precipitation days. By April and May, rainfall increases to 2 mm, while rainy days reach 9–10. The highest amount of precipitation falls during the summer months and early autumn. July, August, and September are the wettest months, each receiving about 4 mm of precipitation. Notably, September stands out with the highest number of precipitation days—averaging 15 days. Rain is also frequent in July and August, occurring approximately 13 days each month.

Despite the increased frequency of precipitation during the summer and autumn, the total amount remains moderate. Even in the "wettest" months, the maximum volume is only 4 mm. This suggests that precipitation in Tianshui most often takes the form of short-lived or low-intensity rain, rather than prolonged downpours. By October, precipitation decreases to 3 mm (12 rainy days), and in November, it returns to near-winter levels—1 mm of precipitation and 8 days with rain.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Tianshui, it is important to consider the significant seasonal weather fluctuations. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion, as the city and its surroundings are perfect for exploring on foot. Layering is also essential year-round, as daily temperature swings can be quite noticeable. Don't forget a basic first-aid kit and sunscreen, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Winter (December–February) in Tianshui is quite cold, with average temperatures below zero and minimal precipitation. You will need warm clothing: sweaters, fleece tops, an insulated jacket or coat, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Although precipitation is rare, it's best to bring waterproof shoes in case of snow or sleet. During transitional months like March, November, and even cool October, warm clothes will also come in handy, though you can shift towards lighter jackets and sweaters that are easy to remove when it warms up during the day.

The summer months (June–August) in Tianshui are warm, with average temperatures around +20 to +22°C. Your wardrobe should be based on lightweight, breathable clothing: t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and light trousers. Although summer is the "wettest" season, the amount of precipitation is low (up to 4 mm per month), but the number of rainy days increases. Therefore, a light umbrella or raincoat won't go amiss, especially in July, August, and September. In spring (April–May) and early autumn (September), the weather is usually pleasant but changeable. It's recommended to pack both light items and something warmer for the evening or in case of a cold spell, such as a windbreaker or cardigan.
