General Weather Overview

Handan features a continental climate with four distinct seasons. The weather here is characterised by significant annual temperature fluctuations, so travellers should prepare for vastly different conditions depending on the time of their visit. Winters in Handan are cold and dry, with average temperatures around 0°C, whilst summers are very hot and more humid, with temperatures regularly rising above 30°C.

A key feature of the local climate is the uneven distribution of rainfall. Most of the year is dry; however, during the summer months, particularly in July and August, there is a noticeable increase in rainy days. This short rainy season coincides with the peak of the summer heat. Spring and autumn are comfortable transitional periods with moderate temperatures, considered the most pleasant times to visit the city.

Temperature

The climate in Handan is defined by distinct seasons and significant temperature variations throughout the year. Visitors can expect hot summers and cold winters. The sweltering months are June and July, when the average temperature reaches +28°C, and daily highs often rise above +32°C. Conversely, the coldest month is January, with an average temperature of around -0.1°C and night frosts reaching -5°C.

The summer period, especially July and August, is characterised not only by high temperatures but also by an increase in rainy days. Winter in Handan is cold and predominantly dry, with temperatures consistently dropping below freezing, especially after sunset. Spring and autumn are comfortable transitional seasons, though they feature substantial differences between day and night temperatures. In months like April or October, a warm day can turn into a rather cool evening, which is important to consider when choosing your wardrobe for the trip.

Precipitation

Handan experiences a sharp continental monsoon climate, resulting in a clear division of the year into dry and wet seasons. The majority of annual precipitation falls during the summer months, whilst winter is notable for its aridity.

The wet season peaks in July and August. During this time, the number of rainy days rises sharply to 12 per month, meaning it rains approximately every two to three days. Summer rains typically occur as heavy but short downpours, bringing refreshing coolness to the hot weather. September also remains relatively rainy, but precipitation decreases noticeably by October.

The dry season lasts from late autumn to mid-spring. The period from November to March is the driest, with minimal rainfall—practically zero—and only 1-3 rainy days per month. In the coldest months, such as January and December, when night temperatures drop below freezing, light snowfall is theoretically possible; however, due to the general dryness of the air, this is extremely rare.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Handan, it is important to choose your wardrobe carefully, as the weather here is distinctly seasonal. For the spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) months, layering is the best approach. It can be quite warm during the day, while evenings and nights are cool. Pack light sweaters, T-shirts, jeans, and a windbreaker or light jacket. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as you will certainly want to explore the city on foot.

Summer in Handan, especially in July and August, is hot and humid. The average temperature hovers around 28°C, with daily highs often exceeding 32°C. This period also sees the highest rainfall. Your suitcase should contain light, breathable clothing made of cotton or linen, shorts, T-shirts, and sandals. Be sure to pack an umbrella or a light raincoat. Don't forget sun protection: sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses will be very useful.

Winter (December–February) in the city is cold and dry, with average temperatures around 0°C and night frosts down to -5°C. Precipitation is very rare during this time. To stay comfortable, you will need warm clothing: a winter coat or down jacket, sweaters, and thermal underwear, as well as a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Despite the cold, the sun can be bright, so sunglasses may also come in handy.
