General Weather Character

The climate in Changzhi is continental, with four distinct seasons and significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The city is characterized by cold, dry winters and warm, relatively humid summers. If you are planning a trip, be prepared for completely different weather conditions depending on the time of your visit.

Winter, from December to February, is freezing here and practically without precipitation. Average temperatures drop below zero, and night frosts are a common occurrence. Spring (from March to May) brings rapid warming but remains quite dry. Summer, especially July and August, is the warmest and wettest period. Although the amount of rainfall in millimetres is not large, it is during this time that the highest number of rainy days is observed, indicating the summer monsoon nature of the weather. Autumn (from September to November) is a time of gradual cooling and decreasing precipitation, offering comfortable conditions for travel, especially at the beginning of the season.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Changzhi is characterized by distinct seasons and significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Winter here is cold, while summer is warm and moderately hot. The coldest month is traditionally January, with an average temperature of about -2.7°C and night frosts reaching -8°C. The peak of summer heat falls on July, when the average temperature is a comfortable 23.3°C, and daily highs rise to almost 28°C.

The winter period, from December to February, is distinguished by consistently freezing weather, especially at night when the air temperature stays confidently below zero. During the day, the thermometer may rise slightly above 0°C. Summer months, on the contrary, give pleasant warmth. From June to August, comfortable weather settles in Changzhi, although it is worth noting that July and August account for the greatest number of days with precipitation. The temperature at this time is rarely exhaustingly hot, which makes the city attractive for visiting.

One of the climatic features of Changzhi is noticeable daily temperature changes. The difference between day and night readings can reach 10–13°C, especially in the transitional seasons — spring and autumn. For example, in March, daytime warmth is quickly replaced by night-time cool. Travellers planning a trip are recommended to take layered clothing with them to feel comfortable both in the sunny afternoon and in the cool evening.

Precipitation

In the city of Changzhi, a pronounced seasonality of precipitation is observed, with a clear division into wet summer and dry winter periods. The climate is characterized by a summer monsoon, which brings the bulk of annual precipitation from June to September. Winters, on the contrary, are distinguished by their dryness and cold weather.

The wet season reaches its peak in the middle of summer. July is the rainiest month of the year, both in terms of total precipitation volume and frequency: on average, there are about 16 days with precipitation here. This means that it rains approximately every other day. August is also quite wet, with 13 rainy days. Summer precipitation can be intense, so travellers should take an umbrella or raincoat with them.

The dry season falls on the winter months. The driest are December and January, when the amount of precipitation tends to zero, and the number of days with it is minimal (2-3 days a month). Considering that average temperatures at this time drop below zero, rare precipitation falls mainly in the form of light snow rather than rain. Spring and autumn are transitional periods with a moderate amount of precipitation.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Changzhi, it is important to consider the four distinct seasons that dictate the choice of wardrobe. The climate here is distinguished by a cold and dry winter, as well as a warm and more humid summer. A universal tip for any time of the year is to use the principle of layering in clothing, which will allow you to easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day. And, of course, do not forget comfortable walking shoes, as they will become your main companion in exploring the city.

Summer months, from June to August, delight with warmth, when the temperature consistently stays above +20°C. At this time you will need light clothing: T-shirts, shorts, and dresses. However, summer is also the rainiest period, especially July, so a waterproof windbreaker or umbrella will be extremely necessary. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is very changeable. It can be cool in the morning and warm during the day. Jeans or trousers, T-shirts, as well as a sweater or fleece jacket and a light jacket that can be removed if necessary, are ideal for these seasons.

Winter in Changzhi, covering the period from December to February, is a cold and dry time of year. Air temperature often drops significantly below zero, especially during night hours. To feel comfortable, be sure to pack a warm winter jacket, sweaters, thermal underwear, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves. Despite the fact that heavy snowfalls do not usually occur, warm and preferably waterproof shoes will make your walks around the winter city much more pleasant.
