Travel Tips

To ensure your trip to Hechi goes perfectly, it is worth noting a few local nuances in advance. We have prepared a list of useful recommendations to help you feel confident and comfortable while traveling through this picturesque corner of China.

  1. Clothing and Essentials: The climate in the region is subtropical and humid. In summer, choose light, breathable fabrics (cotton, linen), while for the winter months (December to February), a warm jacket or sweater will be useful, as there is often no central heating. Be sure to bring comfortable, non-slip shoes for walking in karst mountains and caves, as well as a raincoat or umbrella.
  2. Transport: Public transport can be difficult to navigate without knowledge of the language. The most convenient way to get around is by taxi. It is recommended to install car-hailing apps on your smartphone in advance (usually built into Alipay) so you do not have to explain the destination to the driver using gestures. Always have the name of your hotel or attraction written in Chinese characters.
  3. Finances: International bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) are rarely accepted, mostly only in luxury hotels. The primary method of payment is via QR codes in Alipay or WeChat Pay apps, to which you can link a foreign card. Nevertheless, always carry a supply of cash in Yuan, especially if you plan to visit remote longevity villages.
  4. Health and Safety: Hechi is a green region, so be sure to bring high-quality insect repellent for mosquitoes and midges. It is strictly not recommended to drink tap water; use only bottled water. Pharmacies are easy to find by the green cross symbol, but it is better to bring specific personal medications with you.
  5. Communication: The English language is practically not spoken here. It is vital to download an offline translator to your phone with a photo translation function (for menus and signs) and voice input. This will resolve 90% of communication issues with locals.
  6. Local Etiquette: Be respectful to elders — the culture of longevity and respect for age is particularly strong in this region. Do not stick chopsticks vertically into rice (this resembles a funeral ritual). Accept and offer business cards or money with both hands.
  7. What to Avoid: Try not to use the services of unlicensed private drivers ("touts") at stations and airports — the risk of being overcharged is very high. Also, avoid visiting unverified street food stalls if you have a sensitive stomach, as local cuisine can be quite specific and spicy. Muslim travelers should exercise caution and verify ingredients where possible, as Halal certification may not be displayed in small eateries.
  8. Additional Advice: If you are heading to Bama County (the famous longevity village), note that the infrastructure there is simpler than in the city center. Book accommodation and transfers in advance, as during peak season there are many domestic tourists visiting for health retreats.

Following these simple rules will make your holiday pleasant and safe, allowing you to focus on the beauty of nature. Hechi is a hospitable land, and a little preparation will help you get the maximum positive emotions from your trip.
