Zhangshu, located in Jiangxi Province, lies within a subtropical monsoon climate zone. This part of China is characterized by four distinct seasons: from hot and humid summers to cool but relatively mild winters. Its proximity to the Yangtze River results in high humidity levels that are felt throughout the year.

The overall annual temperature range typically varies from 0°C on winter nights to +35°C at the height of the summer season. The best time to visit the city is considered to be spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when the weather is most stable and temperatures are comfortable for walking and sightseeing with good visibility.

The temperature regime in Zhangshu is marked by significant seasonal fluctuations. The hottest months are July and August, when average daily highs reach +34...+35°C, and nights remain very warm (around +27°C). Combined with high humidity, this creates a "sauna effect" typical of the Yangtze River basin.

Winter in this part of China is cool but not harsh. In January, the coldest month, daytime temperatures usually hover around +10°C, while at night they can drop to +3...+4°C. Spring and autumn delight travelers with the most pleasant conditions: in April and October, the air warms up to +20...+24°C, creating ideal conditions for exploring the local culture without exhausting heat or cold.

Precipitation in Zhangshu has a pronounced monsoon character, with peak humidity during the summer months. The rainiest period is early summer, especially June, when rainfall can reach 382 mm and it rains on average 20 days per month. During this time, the city is often shrouded in fog, and humidity reaches its maximum.

In contrast, the winter season is characterized by relative dryness. In December and January, precipitation is minimal (about 38–77 mm), and there are significantly more sunny days. While occasional snow is possible during this period, it rarely stays for long. If you want to avoid prolonged rains, plan your visit to China for the second half of autumn, when the sky is most often clear.

When packing for your trip to Zhangshu, it is important to consider the seasonality and high humidity. In summer (June–August), you will need light clothing made of natural fabrics such as cotton or linen, as well as a reliable umbrella or raincoat to protect against sudden monsoon downpours. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat, as the summer sun in China can be very strong.

In winter (December–February), it’s worth bringing warm jackets, scarves, and thermal underwear, as the humidity makes the cold feel sharper. During the transitional periods of spring and autumn, layering is the best approach: combining T-shirts with light sweaters or windbreakers will keep you comfortable when moving between the cool outdoors and air-conditioned spaces.
