General Weather Overview

The climate in Nanchang can be characterised as humid subtropical, with four distinct seasons. This means that travellers can expect a hot and humid summer, followed by a mild and drier autumn. Winters here are cool but not severe, while spring brings gradual warming and increased rainfall.

The summer months, especially July and August, are the hottest, with average temperatures around 30°C. The period from late spring to early summer, particularly June, stands out with the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days. Conversely, autumn, from September to November, offers more comfortable, warm, and dry weather, ideal for walking and sightseeing. The winter months, from December to February, are characterised by coolness, with average temperatures ranging from 6.7°C to 8.5°C, and although precipitation is low, overcast days are not uncommon.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Nanchang demonstrates pronounced seasonality with noticeable annual variation. The hottest month is August, when the average air temperature is around 30.4°C, and maximum daily values can reach 34.0°C. In turn, the coldest month is recognised as January: the average temperature at this time holds at the 6.7°C mark, while nightly lows can drop to 3.2°C. Thus, the annual amplitude of average monthly temperatures is quite large.

The summer period in Nanchang, lasting from June to August, is characterised by consistently hot weather. Daytime temperatures, especially in July and August, regularly rise above 30°C, and nights remain very warm, with readings rarely dropping below 23-27°C. This creates a sensation of sultry weather, which is typical for a humid subtropical climate.

Winter in Nanchang, covering December, January, and February, brings a perceptible chill. Average daytime temperatures during this season fluctuate in the range of 10°C to 12°C, whereas nightly values can decrease to 3-5°C, especially in January. Although severe frosts are not characteristic of the region, the coolness can be felt quite acutely due to the air humidity. Diurnal temperature fluctuations throughout the year are usually moderate, averaging 6-8°C between daytime highs and nightly lows.

Precipitation

Precipitation distribution in Nanchang is uneven throughout the year, allowing for the distinction between periods of high humidity and drier seasons. Overall, the city receives a moderate amount of precipitation, but its intensity and frequency change noticeably from month to month.

The wettest period in Nanchang is spring and early summer. Rainfall begins to increase from March (5 mm, 17 rainy days) and reaches its peak in June, which is the rainiest month of the year. In June, an average of 12 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 20. April (7 mm, 16 days) and May (6 mm, 17 days) are also characterised by frequent rains, setting the stage for the peak humidity in early summer. July, despite the high temperature, still receives a noticeable amount of precipitation (6 mm), although with fewer rainy days (13 days) compared to June.

Autumn and early winter, on the contrary, are the driest times of the year in Nanchang. Starting from September (2 mm, 8 rainy days), the amount of precipitation and frequency of rains decrease significantly. The driest months are October and December, when only 1 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days drops to 7. November is also distinguished by a low amount of precipitation (2 mm, 9 days). Winter months, January (3 mm, 12 days) and February (4 mm, 15 days), see some increase in the number of days with precipitation compared to October and December, but the total amount of moisture falling remains small.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Nanchang, it is important to consider the distinct change of seasons. In summer (June-August), it is hot and humid here, especially in July and August, when the average temperature hovers around 30°C. Therefore, light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen, will be your best choice. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. June is the rainiest month, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be very handy. In winter (December-February), the weather is cool, with average temperatures of 6-8°C. You will need warm items: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a warm coat (preferably waterproof, as there are rainy days), a hat, a scarf, and gloves.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with more moderate temperatures. In spring, the weather gradually warms up, but the number of rainy days increases, so layered clothing and an umbrella will be quite useful. In autumn, especially in September and October, comfortable warm and dry weather sets in, ideal for walking. At this time, you will find a light jacket or sweater useful for evening strolls. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are a mandatory attribute for a traveller, as you will surely want to explore the city on foot.

Given the variability of the weather, especially in the off-season, and frequent rains during certain periods, the principle of layering in clothing is your best friend in Nanchang. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Do not forget an electronics adapter if needed, and a portable charger. And, of course, it is always useful to have a small first aid kit with basic medications with you.
