Overview

Palmar Sur welcomes travelers with a classic tropical climate characterized by consistently high temperatures and high humidity. Eternal summer reigns here: throughout the year, average temperatures fluctuate within a comfortable range of +23°C to +25°C, and nights bring only a slight coolness, rarely dropping below +20°C.

The weather calendar highlights a drier period at the beginning of the year, from January to March, when rainfall is minimal. With the arrival of April, humidity begins to rise, transitioning into a full rainy season that lasts until the end of autumn. Precipitation peaks in October when nature receives the most moisture.

A hallmark of the climate in this region of Costa Rica is its remarkable consistency: there are no sudden temperature drops or exhausting heat. Even during the rainy season, showers are often short-lived, refreshing the air and sustaining the lush greenery, making it possible to plan a trip at almost any time of year.

Temperature

The climate in Palmar Sur is remarkably stable, offering tourists warm and comfortable weather almost year-round. The average annual temperature stays within the range of 23.5°C to 25.1°C, creating ideal conditions for a tropical getaway. The hottest months are traditionally February and March, when daytime temperatures reach 29°C. At this time, the sun is at its most intense, which should be considered when planning excursions and walks.

The concept of "winter" in this region of Costa Rica is quite relative. Even in the "coldest" months — November, December, and January — daytime temperatures rarely drop below 26-27°C, remaining pleasantly summer-like. The difference between seasons is hardly felt physically, except for the change in humidity, so travelers can count on gentle warmth regardless of the date on the calendar.

A characteristic feature of the local temperature regime is the noticeable contrast between day and night. After the midday heat, a refreshing coolness sets in: during the night hours, the temperature consistently drops to 20–21°C. This difference allows for a comfortable rest and recovery without exhausting stuffiness, while enjoying the freshness of tropical evenings.

Precipitation

In Palmar Sur, located in the tropical belt of Costa Rica, precipitation occurs in the form of rain year-round, but its intensity changes noticeably depending on the season. The driest period in terms of moisture falls at the beginning of the year — January, February, and March. During this time, rainfall is minimal (about 2–3 mm), and February is considered the least rainy month, with only about 15 days of precipitation recorded.

With the arrival of spring, humidity gradually increases, and a distinct rainy season begins in May, lasting until November. During this period, it rains almost every day: statistics show between 30 and 31 rainy days per month. The wettest month of the year is October, when rainfall peaks (averaging 27 mm), so travelers should be prepared for regular showers.

A characteristic feature of Palmar Sur's climate is the high frequency of rain even in months when the total volume is small. For example, in January, despite the low number of millimeters, it can rain up to 24 days a month, which most likely manifests as a light drizzle or brief "sun showers." By December, the intensity of the downpours subsides, preparing nature for a new dry cycle.

Packing Tips

When packing for Palmar Sur, keep in mind that the town enjoys a warm tropical climate with fairly stable air temperatures around 24–25°C year-round. Your wardrobe should be based on light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen, as well as quick-drying synthetics. Shorts, T-shirts, and summer sundresses are suitable for any month, but don't forget comfortable closed-toe shoes for long walks and trekking, plus sandals for relaxing.

Special attention should be paid to rain protection. From May to November, there is significant rainfall, with up to 30 rainy days per month. Even during the "drier" period from January to March, there is still a chance of short showers. Therefore, a light raincoat, waterproof poncho, or compact umbrella are essential items for your suitcase. Due to the high humidity, things can take longer than usual to dry, so we recommend bringing enough changes of clothes.

Despite the warm weather, a light sweatshirt or long-sleeved shirt will come in handy for evenings or protection against insects. The sun in Costa Rica is very intense, so be sure to pack sunscreen with a high SPF, a hat, and sunglasses. Insect repellent is also a must, especially if you plan to visit nature parks or go for walks in the evening.
