General Weather Overview

Willemstad, the capital of Curacao, boasts a tropical climate with warm and sunny weather throughout the year. Temperature fluctuations here are minimal: the average monthly temperature stays within a comfortable range of 26°C to 28.5°C. This makes the city an attractive destination for beach holidays and water sports at any time of the year.

Despite the general aridity, two main seasons can be distinguished in Willemstad. The dry season lasts approximately from January to September, when rainfall is minimal and the number of rainy days is low, especially from April to May. The short rainy season usually falls in October and November, when rainfall increases slightly and the number of rainy days rises, although rains are rarely prolonged and most often manifest as short-term tropical showers.

Overall, the weather in Willemstad is very predictable and pleasant. Even during the so-called "wet" season, the sun delights with its presence most of the time, and a gentle sea breeze helps to tolerate the heat more easily. This allows you to plan a trip for almost any month, focusing on personal preferences regarding the number of tourists or specific events.

Temperature

Truly tropical weather with very stable temperature readings prevails in Willemstad all year round. The annual temperature range here is small: average daily highs usually fluctuate from 26.6°C (February) to 29.5°C (September), and average nightly lows range from 25.1°C (February) to 27.6°C (September). The hottest month is typically September, when the average temperature reaches 28.5°C. The "coolest" month is considered to be February with an average temperature of 25.9°C, although even this value ensures very comfortable conditions for relaxation.

The so-called "summer" period, covering the months roughly from May to October, is characterized by consistently hot weather. Daytime temperatures during this time confidently stay above 27°C, peaking in August and September (average highs of 28.9°C and 29.5°C respectively). The "winter" months, from December to March, are very mild and warm in Willemstad. Temperatures during this period remain extremely pleasant, with average values around 26°C, and rarely drop below 25°C even at night, making the city an ideal place to escape the cold at any time of year.

One of the remarkable features of Willemstad's climate is the minimal temperature fluctuation between day and night. The difference between average maximum and minimum temperatures within a single month rarely exceeds 1.5-2°C (for example, in September the difference between 29.5°C and 27.6°C is only 1.9°C, and in February between 26.6°C and 25.1°C it is 1.5°C). This means that evenings and nights here are just as warm and comfortable as the days, and you won't have to worry about needing to bring a lot of warm clothing, even if you plan late walks.

Precipitation

The general precipitation pattern in Willemstad shows that the city receives a relatively small amount of rain throughout the year; however, there is distinct seasonality. Snow does not fall here due to the tropical climate.

The period from January to September is characterized by minimal rainfall. For most of this time, from January to July, the average monthly precipitation is only 1 mm. Even with a certain number of rainy days, for example, 15 days in January or 12 days in July, such a small amount of precipitation suggests that rains are generally very light and brief. The driest months of the year are April and May, when not only 1 mm of precipitation is recorded, but also the lowest number of rainy days – just 5. In August and September, precipitation increases slightly to 2 mm per month, while maintaining about 12 rainy days.

A more noticeable increase in precipitation is observed from October to December, which can be considered a short wet season. November stands out as the wettest month of the year, when an average of 5 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 24. October is slightly behind with 4 mm of precipitation and 22 rainy days. In December, there is also a high probability of rain (21 days), although the total precipitation decreases to 2 mm. Precipitation in these months is most likely to take the form of short-term tropical showers, which are quickly replaced by sunny weather without overshadowing your holiday for long.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Willemstad, keep in mind that warm tropical weather prevails here all year round. Your wardrobe should consist mainly of light and breathable clothing: cotton or linen T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, skirts, and light trousers are ideal. Do not forget a few swimsuits to enjoy the beautiful beaches and waters of Curacao. Sun protection is extremely important, so be sure to bring sunscreen with a high protection factor (SPF), a wide-brimmed hat or cap, as well as high-quality sunglasses. For walking along the charming streets of Willemstad and exploring the surroundings, you will need comfortable footwear – sandals or light trainers would be an excellent choice.

Although the temperature in Willemstad remains high and comfortable even in the evenings, a light cardigan, shawl, or long-sleeved shirt may be useful for air-conditioned rooms or in case of a light evening breeze. Regarding precipitation, it is most likely in the period from October to December, as well as in January, when the number of rainy days increases, although the rains themselves are usually short-lived. In these months, and in general, a compact umbrella or a very light, foldable waterproof jacket may prove useful. During the rest of the year, precipitation is minimal, but even a short tropical downpour will not spoil your experience, as the sun returns quickly.
