Magnificent monuments of industrial architecture have been preserved on the grounds of the former Gamle Carlsberg brewery: from massive brewing copper tuns and antique steam engines to the famous arch supported by four majestic granite elephants. The museum complex is not just an exhibition of equipment, but a living testament to the workers' daily lives, their traditions, and the Jacobsen family's contribution to global science and culture.

A particular highlight of the collection is a unique assembly of more than 10,000 beer bottles from all corners of the world. What to Do

Visitors can expect a fascinating immersion into the world of production of the famous beverage, starting with a walk through authentic 19th-century workshops. In the museum halls, you can see not only laboratory equipment and old brewing vats but also amusing mannequins recreating scenes from the old brewery's life. One of the highlights is viewing the collection of vintage cars that once delivered the products, and the endless rows of displays featuring thousands of different bottles.

In addition to the main exhibition, it is worth stopping by the Jacobsen House, where exclusive varieties of beer are still brewed. The ticket price usually includes a tasting of two glasses of beer, allowing you to appreciate the skill of local brewers in a historic setting. You can conclude your visit with a walk through the picturesque gardens or a visit to the souvenir shop, which offers a wide selection of unique brand products, including rare beer varieties that are not produced for export.

Getting There

Getting to the museum complex, located at Gamle Carlsberg Vej 11, is quite easy. From the city center, for example from the famous Tivoli Gardens, you can walk in about 20–30 minutes while enjoying the urban architecture. For those who prefer public transport, buses and metro trains are available, serving stops in the Vesterbro district.

If you prefer to take a taxi, the ride from the center will take no more than 10 minutes. For travelers with their own or rented cars, parking is provided directly on-site, making the visit convenient even for those coming from further away.

History & Facts

The history of this site began on November 10, 1847, when Jacob Christian Jacobsen brewed his first batch of beer. One of the company's most significant achievements was the establishment of a chemical-physiological laboratory in 1865. It was here that the method for cultivating pure yeast was developed, forever changing the quality of the beverage worldwide. Notably, Jacobsen chose not to patent the discovery, selflessly sharing it with breweries around the world to ensure high standards everywhere.

At the end of the 19th century, a disagreement arose between the founder and his son, Carl Jacobsen, leading to the creation of a competing enterprise — Ny Carlsberg ("New Carlsberg"). It was not until 1906 that the companies finally merged under the Carlsberg Foundation. The owning family was known for its philanthropy: many cultural sites in Copenhagen were built with their funds, including the famous Little Mermaid statue and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek building.

Today, the architectural ensemble of the district, designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup, is gradually transforming into a new residential and cultural area. Meanwhile, 95% of the company's capital still belongs to the foundation, which directs a significant portion of profits toward supporting Danish science, art, and educational programs, preserving the legacy of the great brewers.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the exhibitions, examine the unique bottle collection, and enjoy the atmosphere of the historic gardens, most guests need about 2–3 hours. This is usually enough time to complete the main tour route and visit the tasting bar.

If you plan to browse the souvenir shop, have lunch at one of the local restaurants, or study the architectural details of the district in more depth, it is better to set aside about half a day. Its easy walking accessibility makes it simple to fit a visit into your Copenhagen itinerary.

Working Hours

The doors of the "Home of Carlsberg" are open to guests daily. From Sunday to Thursday, the museum welcomes visitors from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On weekends — Friday and Saturday — the opening hours are extended until 8:00 PM, providing a great opportunity for a pleasant end to the evening.
