Overview

The climate of Chamonix can be described as alpine mountain weather with clearly defined seasons. It is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Winters here are quite cold and snowy, attracting winter sports enthusiasts, while summers are moderately warm and often refreshed by rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and hiking along scenic mountain trails.

Chamonix experiences four distinct seasons. Winter, lasting roughly from December to March, brings stable sub-zero temperatures (the average January temperature is around -6.7°C) and heavy snowfall. Summer, from June to August, offers milder weather: average temperatures in July and August hover around +13°C, with highs potentially reaching +18°C. Spring and autumn are transitional periods with changeable weather, as temperatures gradually rise or fall and nature is painted in vibrant colors.

One of the specific features of the weather in Chamonix is the relatively high number of precipitation days throughout the year, although the precipitation itself is usually not very intense (averaging 4-8 mm per month). For example, May can have up to 22 days with precipitation, while February has about 11. This means that lightweight waterproof clothing can come in handy at any time of year. This specific climate contributes to lush greenery in summer and the formation of a stable snow cover in winter, making a holiday in Chamonix attractive year-round.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Chamonix exhibits classic features of an alpine climate with distinct seasonal changes. Throughout the year, the thermometer fluctuates within a significant range. The coldest months are traditionally January, with an average temperature of around -6.7°C (minimums can drop to -10.7°C), and December, where the average temperature is approximately -6.1°C, with nightly lows reaching -9.9°C. The warmest period occurs in July and August, when average daytime temperatures reach +13.4°C and +13.1°C respectively, and maximums can rise to +18.4°C.

Summer months in Chamonix, from June to August, are characterized by pleasantly warm weather during the day and a noticeable chill at night. Daytime highs in July (up to +18.4°C) and August (up to +18.1°C) create comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. However, nighttime temperatures in these same months can drop to +8.4°C and +8.1°C respectively, highlighting significant diurnal fluctuations that often reach 10 degrees. Therefore, even in the height of summer, it is recommended to have warm clothing for evening walks or early morning outings.

Winter in Chamonix, spanning from December to February, brings consistently frosty weather. Average temperatures in January (-6.7°C) and December (-6.1°C) stay firmly below zero, and night frosts can reach -10.7°C in January. Daytime highs in the coldest winter months rarely rise above -2°C. February is usually slightly milder, with an average temperature of about -3.7°C, but still with nightly lows around -8.3°C and daytime highs of about +0.9°C. Diurnal temperature differences are also noticeable in winter, averaging 7-9 degrees, which is typical for mountainous areas. Spring and autumn months serve as transitional periods with gradual changes in temperature but also maintain the difference between daytime warmth and nighttime chill characteristic of Chamonix.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Chamonix occurs throughout the year, and there is no clearly defined dry season. A characteristic feature is that the total monthly precipitation is quite low, usually within 4-8 mm, but days with precipitation can be frequent. The type of precipitation naturally changes depending on the time of year: in winter, it is predominantly snow, and in the warmer months, it is rain.

The winter period, from December to March, as well as November, brings snowfall to Chamonix. The highest amount of precipitation in the form of snow falls in December (8 mm) and January (6 mm). In these months, as well as in March and November, the number of days with precipitation ranges from 14 to 17, which means frequent but generally light snowfall, creating excellent conditions for winter sports.

With the arrival of warmer weather, from approximately April to October, precipitation in Chamonix falls mainly as rain. May and June stand out as the months with the highest frequency of precipitation—22 and 20 rainy days respectively—although the monthly norm remains moderate (6 mm and 5 mm). Even in the warmest summer months, July and August, when only about 4 mm of precipitation falls, it rains an average of 16-17 days. April and October are transitional months when both rain and the first or last snowfalls are possible, especially in higher parts of the valley.

In terms of the amount of precipitation, the wettest month in Chamonix is December (8 mm), followed by January and May (6 mm each). The lowest amount of precipitation, only 4 mm, falls in February, April, July, August, September, and October. However, if looking at frequency, May (22 days) and June (20 days) can be considered the "wettest" months due to the high number of days with precipitation. Conversely, February, with 11 days of precipitation, is the month with the lowest frequency.

Packing Tips

When packing for Chamonix, it's important to remember the changeable mountain weather and significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The key principle for packing is layering. This will allow you to easily adapt to weather changes by adding or removing layers of clothing. Regardless of the season, you will need comfortable waterproof shoes for walking, as even with low total precipitation, days with some rainfall or snow are quite frequent (from 11 to 22 days per month). It is also worth bringing sunscreen and sunglasses, as the mountain sun can be very strong even in cool weather.

In winter (from November to March), Chamonix is dominated by sub-zero temperatures, often dropping to -10°C or lower (for instance, the average January temperature is -6.7°C), and regular snowfall. Therefore, your luggage must include: a warm waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers, thermal underwear, several layers of warm clothing (fleece jackets, sweaters), a winter hat, a scarf, and gloves or mittens. Don't forget warm, waterproof boots with a good grip to move confidently along snowy streets and trails.

The summer months (June-August) bring warmer weather with average temperatures around +13°C (highs up to +18°C), but evenings remain cool, and rain, while not heavy (4-5 mm per month), occurs quite often (16-20 days per month). Bring light trousers and shorts, and T-shirts, but also don't forget a warm sweater or fleece jacket and a light waterproof and windproof jacket. The shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) are characterized by even greater unpredictability: both warm sunny days and sharp cold snaps with rain or even early/late snow are possible, especially given the frequent precipitation in May (22 days). Therefore, the principle of layering and having waterproof clothing and footwear is particularly relevant here. A compact umbrella or a raincoat will also be useful at any time of year.
