What to Do

The first thing to do at Bergmann Brewery is, of course, to order a glass of traditional Export. This beer is considered the city's signature brew, and here it is made using time-tested recipes. If you can't decide, order a tasting flight to appreciate the full variety of local brews.

Be sure to check out the Stehbierhalle—a classic standing hall where you can enjoy simple snacks and chat with locals. In warmer months, a spacious beer garden awaits guests with views of the monumental Phoenix West structures. The atmosphere is complemented by rotating food trucks, offering fresh food that pairs perfectly with cool drinks.

For those who want a "behind the scenes" look, fascinating tours are available. You'll learn about the brand's challenging road to revival and see the process of creating the very drink that Dortmund miners once loved. It's an excellent spot to relax with friends, where a sense of ease and sincerity prevails.

Getting There

The brewery is located at Elias-Bahn-Weg 2 in the Hörde district, on the grounds of the famous Phoenix West industrial park. Getting here from the city center is easy: a car or taxi ride from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) takes only about 10–20 minutes.

If you prefer public transport, use the trams or buses heading to stops in the Hörde area or directly to Phoenix West. This is a great opportunity to combine your trip with a walk through the revitalized industrial quarters.

For those who enjoy active recreation, you can walk or cycle from the nearest metro stations. The route passes by impressive industrial structures, which only heightens the anticipation of your visit to Bergmann Brewery.

History & Facts

The brand's history dates back to 1796. For nearly two centuries, it remained a vital part of the region's beer culture until it was absorbed by large corporations in 1972 and temporarily disappeared from the radar. However, the spirit of "Bergmann" proved stronger than market shifts.

In 2007, enthusiast Thomas Raphael accidentally discovered the rights to the old trademark in a patent database and decided to revive the legend at all costs. Initially, the beer was brewed at partner facilities, but immense demand led to the opening of its own modern plant in Hörde.

The name Bergmann itself translates to "miner," a direct nod to the city's industrial past. The building's design and interiors are crafted with deep respect for the workers' labor, and the Stehbierhalle (standing beer hall) concept recalls the good old days when workers would stop by for a glass after their shift.

Time Needed

To enjoy the atmosphere and the taste of fresh beer without rushing, we recommend planning a visit of 1.5 to 3 hours. This is plenty of time for a short tour, getting to know the production process, and a cozy session in the beer garden.

If you plan to visit on a weekend when it's particularly lively and food trucks are serving a variety of snacks, time will fly by, and you might want to stay longer to soak up the true local flavor.
