What to Do

The main reason to visit is a walk above the abyss. As you cross the suspension structure, you will feel a slight vibration and swaying, which, combined with the 50-meter depth beneath your feet, provides a pleasant rush of adrenaline. It is the perfect moment to stop in the center of the bridge and take panoramic photos of the strait where two continents meet.

Beyond the bridge itself, visitors can enjoy fascinating hikes along the nature park trails. Here, you can not only breathe in the fresh mountain air but also encounter the famous Barbary macaques. These playful yet wild animals often watch tourists directly from the railings, creating unique opportunities for observing wildlife in its natural habitat.

Many tourists prefer to take short breaks here for contemplation. From this height, you can clearly see the movement of giant cruise liners and tankers in the port, and on a clear day, the silhouettes of the African mountains are distinctly visible. For social media enthusiasts, the bridge is a magnificent location for creating content that is guaranteed to garner plenty of enthusiastic reactions.

Getting There

The most convenient way to reach this impressive location is by the Gibraltar Cable Car. The base station is located in the central part of the city, and in just 6 minutes, you will ascend to the top of the Rock. From the upper station, you need to walk for about 10–15 minutes along well-marked nature reserve trails, following the signs to the bridge.

For hiking enthusiasts, there is an option to climb on foot from the center of Gibraltar. The path leads through picturesque slopes; however, please note that the climb is quite steep and requires comfortable shoes and a supply of water. You can also use official tourist taxis that run between the main attractions of the Upper Rock.

If you are planning a trip by private or rental car, remember that direct access to the bridge by car is not possible. It is best to leave your vehicle in one of the parking lots at the base (for example, near the cable car station), as the nature reserve area is a pedestrian zone for most types of private transport.

History & Facts

The Windsor Suspension Bridge is a modern masterpiece of engineering that was officially opened in June 2016. Its construction was a significant step in upgrading Gibraltar's tourism infrastructure, allowing various hiking trails to be linked into a single exciting "Thrilling Path" network.

Despite its recent addition, the bridge is located in a place with a colossal historical past. The gorge it spans was formed about six million years ago due to the movement of tectonic plates. It was here that nature created natural barriers that for centuries made the Rock an impregnable fortress for Moorish, Spanish, and British forces.

Interestingly, the design of the structure took into account the extreme wind conditions of the Strait of Gibraltar. Engineers created a flexible yet incredibly strong system capable of withstanding the high wind gusts characteristic of this altitude. Today, the bridge serves as a symbol of Gibraltar's transformation from a closed military outpost into a tourism hub open to the world.

Time Needed

To walk across the bridge at a leisurely pace, take panoramic photos, and have a short rest while admiring the views, a standard visitor will need between 1 to 1.5 hours. This time includes the approach to the bridge from the nearest trails and the viewing of the structure itself.

If your visit is part of a larger hike through the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, including visits to caves and tunnels, we recommend setting aside at least 3-4 hours for the entire route. This will allow you to enjoy the walk without rushing and see all the facets of this amazing natural area.

Working Hours

The attraction is open to visitors daily. The bridge's operating hours coincide with the access hours for the Upper Rock Nature Reserve: from 9:30 AM to 7:45 PM (Monday — Sunday).

Please keep in mind that in the event of unfavorable weather conditions, such as gale-force winds or thick fog, access to the bridge may be restricted for safety reasons. It is recommended to plan your visit in the morning or a couple of hours before closing to catch the best light for photography.
