General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Zakynthos is classic Mediterranean, delighting travellers with warm weather for most of the year. It is characterised by two clearly defined seasons: a long, hot, and very dry summer, followed by a mild and wetter winter. Thanks to this, the island is one of the sunniest places in Greece, offering ideal conditions for a beach holiday.

The summer months, from June to August, are the peak of the tourist season. The weather during this time is consistently hot and sunny. The average air temperature ranges from 22°C to 26.5°C, and rainfall is virtually non-existent. July and August are the driest months, guaranteeing cloudless skies and calm seas, creating excellent conditions for swimming and water sports.

Winter, especially from November to February, brings cooler temperatures and rain. However, the weather remains mild, with an average temperature of around 12-14°C. This period sees the bulk of the annual precipitation, and the number of rainy days increases noticeably, particularly in December and January. Spring and autumn offer a comfortable shoulder season with pleasant temperatures and a moderate number of sunny days, perfectly suited for excursions and hiking through the island's picturesque corners.

Temperature

The climate in Zakynthos is classic Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The annual temperature regime makes the island attractive to tourists for many months. The hottest time of the year is the period from July to August, when the average temperature steadily holds at +25.5°C to +26.5°C. The coolest months are January and February, with an average temperature of about +12.3°C, ensuring a very mild winter without frost.

Summer in Zakynthos is a realm of sun and warmth. As early as June, the average temperature reaches a comfortable +22.8°C, and in the peak months of July and August, daily highs rise to +27-28°C. Nights also remain very warm, with temperatures around +24-25°C, which is ideal for evening walks along the coast. Daily temperature fluctuations are insignificant, creating consistently hot weather perfect for beach relaxation.

Winter on the island passes without extreme cold. In December and January, average daytime temperatures hover around +13-15°C, and nighttime temperatures rarely drop below +11°C. This is the wettest period of the year, but the weather remains relatively comfortable. Spring and autumn are wonderful times to visit Zakynthos if you prefer moderate warmth. In May, the average temperature is already +18.7°C, and in September it still holds at a pleasant +23.9°C, allowing you to enjoy both sightseeing and beach activities.

Precipitation

The city of Zakynthos experiences a classic Mediterranean climate with clearly defined wet and dry seasons. Precipitation here falls mainly in the winter months, while summer remains almost completely dry, making it the ideal time for a beach holiday.

The wet season lasts approximately from November to March. November and December are considered the rainiest months. In December, for example, there are on average 17 rainy days, and November sees the highest amount of precipitation — about 7 mm. January is also quite wet, with approximately 16 days with precipitation. Despite the frequency, rains during this period are usually not torrential, but rather take the character of light or moderate drizzle.

With the arrival of spring, rainfall decreases sharply, giving way to a long dry season. Summer in Zakynthos is extremely arid. July and August are the driest months of the year, when rainfall tends towards zero, and rain may occur only once or twice during the entire month. June and September are also very dry, with a minimal number of rainy days, providing guests of the island with many sunny hours to enjoy nature and the sea.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Zakynthos in the warm months, from May to October, the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable items. Pack cotton T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and, of course, several swimsuits to enjoy the famous beaches. Given the hot sun, especially from June to August when there is practically no rainfall, high SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and high-quality sunglasses are not just accessories, but necessities. For walking along picturesque streets and exploring the island, bring comfortable footwear, such as sandals or light trainers, and for evenings, especially in May or September, a light cardigan or shawl will come in handy.

If your journey falls during the period from November to March, it is worth preparing for cooler and wetter weather. At this time of year, Zakynthos receives the highest amount of rainfall, so a key element of your luggage will be a waterproof and windproof jacket. Layering is your best friend: combine T-shirts with jumpers, fleece jackets, or sweaters to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Don't forget an umbrella and comfortable closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from moisture during walks. Despite the rains, winter on the island remains mild, but the right clothing will make your stay comfortable.
