Overview

The climate in Pushkar, India, is best described as hot and predominantly arid, with a distinct monsoon season. For most of the year, it is sunny and dry with high temperatures, especially between April and June. The winter months, from December to February, bring a milder and more pleasant coolness.

Pushkar has three distinct seasons. The hot and dry pre-monsoon season lasts from roughly March to May, when average daytime temperatures often rise above 30°C, and maximums can reach nearly 40°C. Then, typically from June to September, the monsoon season arrives. This is when the bulk of the annual rainfall occurs, particularly in July and August, when the number of rainy days increases significantly, bringing some relief from the heat. From October to February, a cooler and drier season sets in, with comfortable daytime temperatures and chilly nights, making this the most popular time to visit the city.

Temperature

The climate in Pushkar is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The city experiences hot summers and mild winters. The hottest months are April, May, and June. In May, the average maximum temperature peaks at 39.6°C, while the overall average temperature stays around 33.2°C. June is also very hot, with an average maximum of 37.8°C. January is traditionally considered the coldest month, with an average temperature of 15.6°C and nighttime lows that can drop to 8.8°C. December is also cool, with an average temperature of 16.9°C and a minimum around 10.2°C.

The summer period in Pushkar, spanning from April to June, is marked by high temperatures. In April, the average maximum temperature is 37.6°C, and in May, it reaches 39.6°C, creating conditions of dry heat. In June, while high temperatures persist (average maximum of 37.8°C), the rainy season begins, which can be accompanied by increased humidity. Average temperatures during these summer months range from 30.4°C to 33.2°C. In July and August, temperatures drop slightly (average maximums of 33.3°C and 30.7°C, respectively) due to the monsoon rains, but humidity remains high.

The winter months, from December to February, offer much more comfortable temperature conditions. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature is 15.6°C, with daytime highs around 22.4°C and nighttime lows around 8.8°C. February is slightly warmer, with an average temperature of 19.8°C and a daytime maximum of up to 27.1°C. Pushkar is characterized by noticeable diurnal temperature variations, especially in the drier months (for example, in January, the difference between the daytime high and nighttime low is about 13.6°C), so evenings and nights can be significantly cooler than the hot days.

Precipitation

Pushkar experiences a pronounced seasonality in rainfall, with a long dry period and a relatively short rainy season. For most of the year, from October to May, there is little to no precipitation. For instance, no rainy days are recorded in February, while in January, March, April, May, October, November, and December, rainfall is 0 mm, with only one to three rainy days per month.

The monsoon season in Pushkar usually falls between June and September. The highest amount of rainfall occurs in August (averaging 6 mm) and July (5 mm). These months also see the highest number of rainy days: an average of 19 days in July and 16 days in August. June and September are transitional months, with less rainfall (2 mm each) and fewer rainy days (7 and 12, respectively).

Thus, the climate of Pushkar is characterized by a long dry period followed by a brief but noticeable increase in humidity and rain frequency during the summer months. Although the total amount of precipitation is not very high even during the wettest period, the frequency of rain in July and August makes these months significantly more humid than the rest of the year. Snow is not typical for this region of India, given the temperatures.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Pushkar, it's important to consider its climate. Generally, the city is characterized by hot summers and mild winters. From March to June, it gets very hot, with average maximum temperatures reaching 32–40°C, so light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen) will be your best choice. Don't forget high-SPF sunscreen, a hat or cap, and sunglasses. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you'll be doing a lot of exploring on foot.

The monsoon season hits Pushkar from July to September. Although temperatures remain high (averaging 30–33°C), rainfall and humidity increase. A light raincoat or umbrella will come in handy. It's also worth bringing quick-drying clothes and perhaps some insect repellent. Roads can get muddy during this period, so waterproof shoes or water-resistant sandals will be useful.

The winter months, from November to February, offer the most comfortable weather for visiting Pushkar. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, averaging 22–28°C, but nights can be chilly, with temperatures dropping to 9–15°C. Layering is recommended during this time: a t-shirt or light shirt during the day, and a sweater, fleece, or light jacket for the evening or early morning. Since there is almost no rainfall during this period, focus on sun protection during the day and warm clothes for evening walks.
