Two main periods can be distinguished throughout the year. From January to March, the weather is warmest, but this time is also characterized by high humidity and frequent rainfall — the number of rainy days can reach 20 or more per month. Conversely, the period from June to September is considered the drier and fresher season. During this time, rain occurs much less frequently, and the pleasant coolness creates ideal conditions for actively exploring the island and hiking.

The climate on Lifou Island is distinguished by its enviable stability and mildness, ensuring comfortable holiday conditions almost all year round. The hottest period falls during the local summer months — from January to March. During this time, the average air temperature holds at 26–27°C, while daytime highs often reach 28°C. This is the ideal time for those seeking tropical warmth, though one should be prepared for high temperatures often accompanied by increased humidity.

The "winter" season, lasting from June to September, brings a slight drop in temperatures, which is perceived more as a pleasant freshness than cold. The coolest months are July and August, when averages dip to 22°C. Even during this period, the weather remains very mild: minimum temperatures rarely fall below 20–21°C, creating excellent conditions for long walks and discovering the island's nature without exhausting heat.

A unique feature of Lifou's temperature regime is the minimal difference between day and night readings. Daily temperature fluctuations here are extremely insignificant, often amounting to just 1–2 degrees. Thanks to this, evenings on the island remain warm and cosy regardless of the season, and tourists do not have to worry about a sharp chill after sunset.

Rainfall patterns on Lifou are closely tied to the seasonality typical of New Caledonia's tropical climate. The year here can be roughly divided into wet and drier periods. The rainy season coincides with the warmest months — from December to March. During this time, the likelihood of precipitation is highest, and the air becomes more humid.

The dry season arrives during the cooler months, from June to September. This time is considered most favourable for those who prefer clear weather: the number of rainy days drops to a minimum. The driest month is August, when rainfall is observed on average only about 7 days throughout the month, and its intensity is significantly lower compared to the beginning of the year.

When packing for Lifou, opt for light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Since the air temperature here is comfortable year-round (averaging between 22°C and 27°C), t-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses will form the basis of your wardrobe. A useful addition would also be special swimming footwear (aqua shoes) to protect your feet from coral when entering the water, and, of course, water-resistant sunscreen with a high protection factor, which will be useful at any time of year.
