The core of the exhibition consists of 55 authentic wooden houses that were carefully moved here from the central districts to save them from destruction. Walking through the narrow streets of the museum, you will understand why Norway was once proud of this place as the largest wooden metropolis in Europe. Not only have the facades been recreated, but also the complete infrastructure of the past: from the living rooms of officials to craft shops.

The highlight of the complex is the Elsesro estate—the former summer home of a famous shipbuilder, around which this "city within a city" grew. Today, you can do more than just look at exhibits; you can also meet actors in historical costumes who bring the daily life of past centuries to life, turning an ordinary tour into an interactive show.

What to Do

In this museum, history literally comes alive before your eyes. One of the most fascinating activities here is walking through the cobbled alleys, where you can peek into windows and step inside the houses. You can explore the interiors of an old pharmacy, visit a bakery, or a merchant's shop to see how people lived and worked 200 years ago. Every building is a small exhibition with its own unique atmosphere.

The theatrical scenes add a special charm to the visit. Professional actors portraying townspeople from past centuries perform short plays right in the square. You might encounter a barber, a stern official, or a bustling merchant—and you can even ask them questions; they are happy to share the "news" of their time without ever breaking character.

For families with children, the Old Bergen Museum offers many activities: you can play traditional old-fashioned games, climb trees in the park, or feed the birds by the water. After a full walk, it’s worth stopping by the local café in the square to try traditional pastries or visiting the souvenir shop, which sells unique postcards and handmade crafts.

Don't forget to stop by the new information center. In addition to modern exhibitions, there is an amphitheater for relaxing and wonderful panoramic viewpoints that offer an excellent view of the entire museum complex and its surroundings—perfect for taking stunning photos.

Getting There

The attraction is located at Nyhavnsveien 4, which is approximately 3–4 kilometers from the city center. Getting here by public transport is quite simple: buses run regularly from the center of Bergen, taking you to the stop near Elsesro in just 20–30 minutes.

If you prefer a more comfortable and faster way to travel, you can use a taxi. The ride from the city center will take no more than 10–15 minutes. For those traveling by private or rental car, parking is provided near the museum complex.

History & Facts

The history of this site began long before it was transformed into a museum. At the heart of the complex is the "Elsesro" summer house, built at the end of the 18th century by the renowned shipbuilder Rasmus Rolfsen. The property belonged to his family for over a hundred years; it was once a bustling shipyard, and an elegant English-style garden was laid out around the house.

The Old Bergen Museum itself was founded in 1949 on the initiative of the Old Bergen Foundation. Its primary mission was to save unique wooden buildings threatened with demolition due to the modernization of the city center. From 1945 to 1981, buildings from various parts of the city were carefully relocated here, recreating the appearance of Bergen as it was in the 18th and 19th centuries.

During that period, the city was considered the largest wooden city in Europe. Dense construction, narrow cobbled streets, and colorful squares created a unique architectural landscape. Today, the museum features 55 houses, each a genuine witness to a bygone era, preserving a piece of the history of Norwegian townspeople, craftsmen, and merchants.

The modern development of the complex continues today. A new visitor center, designed by the AART architectural firm, was recently opened. Its design, with characteristic gabled roofs, fits harmoniously into the historical context, linking the rich heritage of the past with modern requirements for comfort and museum technology.

Time Needed

For a leisurely stroll through the historical streets and to explore the interiors of the most interesting houses, most visitors need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the past, peek into the workshops, and take memorable photos.

If you plan to attend theatrical performances, visit the souvenir shop, or relax in the local café with a cup of coffee, you should set aside half a day for your visit. The open-air museum invites a relaxed pace, especially in good weather when you can wander through the adjacent park and enjoy views of the bay.
