About

Imagine a green oasis spread across a hill overlooking the center of Skien. Brekkeparken is not just a public park, but a large-scale open-air museum that is part of the Telemark Museum. Spanning approximately 14.5 hectares, it recreates the atmosphere of old Norway, where history blends harmoniously with the natural beauty of an English-style landscape garden.

The heart of the park is the majestic Søndre Brekke mansion, surrounded by 14 carefully preserved farmhouses brought from various parts of the Telemark region. In a country like Norway, traditions are highly valued, and Brekkeparken has become a true storehouse of cultural heritage: here you can see how Norwegians lived centuries ago.

The park is particularly famous for its incredible floral displays. Every spring, in May, a sea of 27,000 tulips blooms here, followed by lush seasonal flower beds in the summer. Walking along the well-kept paths past swan ponds and elegant pavilions, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city and the famous Telemark Canal.

What to Do

In Brekkeparken, everyone will find something to their liking. History buffs should definitely go on one of the themed tours: "Noble Brekke" introduces you to the interiors of the main mansion, while a tour of the farmhouses offers a glimpse into the daily life of Norwegian peasants. For fans of literature, special routes "in the footsteps of Henrik Ibsen" have been developed, as the great playwright is closely connected with these places.

If you have come with the whole family, children will appreciate the modern playground, while adults can relax in cozy cafes. At Brekkeparken Café, you can have lunch on the terrace overlooking the ponds, and at the museum cafe VEV, you can try traditional pastries and cakes. From 2025, Ibsenstua is also open here, where you can taste the famous honey cake and purchase commemorative souvenirs.

The park's cultural program is impressive: the century-old open-air stage regularly hosts Parkjazz concerts, quizzes, and open-air theatrical performances. Don't forget to find the sculpture "Huldra and the Boy" and visit the 1915 music pavilion—the perfect spot for commemorative photos.

Getting There

The attraction is located at Øvregate 32A, on a hill offering a picturesque view of the city center and its waterways. If you are already in the center of Skien, the walk to the park will take only 10–15 minutes. Keep in mind that the road goes uphill, but you will be rewarded with beautiful panoramas of lakes Bryggevannet and Hjellevannet.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses stop within walking distance of the entrance. You can also take a train to Skien station, which is about a 10-minute walk from the park entrance. If you are traveling by car, there are parking spaces near the museum complex, and paid parking is also available in the city center.

A taxi ride from anywhere in the city takes just a few minutes. Cyclists will also find this route convenient, although the climb to the park requires some effort. The park's proximity to other iconic spots, such as the Ibsen Stairs, makes it an excellent point to include in a walking tour of the city.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked with the name of Niels Aall, a prominent statesman who purchased the Søndre Brekke farm in 1810. It was under his leadership in 1815–1816 that an exquisite English-style park was laid out here. Gardener H. S. Pries brought the project to life with artificial grottoes, pavilions, and ponds, turning the estate into a true masterpiece of landscape art of its time.

In 1813, the estate was visited by the Vice-Regent Prince Christian Frederick. One of Skien's most famous legends is associated with this visit—the tale of the "Grey Lady." It is said that the ghost of a woman, whose peace was disturbed during that historic visit, is still occasionally seen in the corridors of the main mansion, adding an air of mystery to the place.

A new chapter in the history of Brekkeparken began in 1909, when the territory was purchased and handed over to the Telemark Museum, becoming a public park. In the following decades, new structures appeared: the music pavilion (1915), designed by architect Heinrich Karsten, and the summer theater (1924), which became the center of the city's cultural life. Today, it is a unique open-air museum that carefully preserves the architectural heritage of the Telemark region.

Time Needed

For a leisurely stroll through the alleys and to enjoy the floral arrangements, you will need about an hour. However, if you plan to take tours of the historical farmhouses and visit the Søndre Brekke mansion, it is best to allow 2 to 4 hours for your visit.

If your trip coincides with cultural events or concerts on the open stage, your stay in the park could extend to half a day. It is also worth leaving time to relax in one of the local cafes, where you can have a snack while admiring the view of the fountains and flower beds.

Working Hours

The public park is open for walks daily and year-round, and entry to the grounds themselves is free. However, there is a specific schedule for visiting the museum exhibitions, the mansion, and the cafes.

According to current data, the main facilities of the complex welcome visitors according to the following schedule:

  • Monday – Sunday: 08:00 – 21:00

Please note that tour times are limited to the season (usually from April to September), and in winter, access to some historical houses may be closed due to weather conditions.
