How to get to Iquitos

How to get there: Introduction

When planning a trip to Iquitos, it is worth noting its unique geographical feature: it is the largest city in the world without a land connection to the outside world. Located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, this colourful jungle metropolis is accessible to travellers primarily by air or river, making the journey itself a true adventure. To reach this amazing destination in Peru, tourists must swap their usual cars and trains for planes and boats.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the "capital of the Peruvian Amazon" is by air transport. The city is served by Captain Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport (IQT), which receives regular flights from the capital and other regions of the country.

The air hub is located just a few kilometres from the centre, ensuring travellers have easy access to city infrastructure immediately after arrival. Given the isolation of the region, flying remains the most reliable option for the majority of tourists.

By Train

Railway connections to this region are completely absent due to the difficult landscape of the impassable Amazon jungle. There are no stations in the city or its surroundings, so tourists travelling through Peru will have to choose alternative methods of transport.

Train enthusiasts should consider routes in other parts of the country, such as to Machu Picchu, as it is impossible to reach Iquitos by rail from any side of the continent.

By Bus

There are no direct bus services to Iquitos, as no roads lead to the city. However, for adventure seekers, a combined route is available: you can take a bus to the cities of Pucallpa or Yurimaguas.

After arriving at these port points, travellers must transfer to a cargo-passenger ferry or a speedboat to continue the journey by river. Such a trip will take several days but will allow you to see the life of the Amazon from within.

By Car

Reaching the city by private car or taxi from other regions of the country is impossible, as Iquitos is isolated from the national road network by impassable forests and rivers. Roads exist only within the city itself and its immediate surroundings.

If you are travelling through Peru by car, it must be left in one of the cities connected to the "mainland," and the journey continued by air or water.

Travel Tips

A trip to the heart of the Amazon requires special preparation, as local conditions differ significantly from the usual urban comfort. To ensure your journey goes smoothly, we have prepared several important recommendations.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. Due to the high humidity and heat, choose light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics in light colours. Be sure to take a raincoat or poncho, as tropical showers are a frequent occurrence here.
  2. Transport. The main means of transport around the city are mototaxis (motorised rickshaws). It is best to agree on the fare with the driver in advance, before boarding.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Nuevo Sol. Although cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, be sure to carry small denomination cash for markets and small shops.
  4. Health and Safety. It is strongly recommended to use mosquito repellents around the clock. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice in beverages from street vendors to ensure hygiene.
  5. Communication. The main language of communication is Spanish. English is spoken in tourist agencies, but knowing basic phrases in the local language will greatly facilitate daily interaction.
  6. Local Etiquette. People here are open and friendly. It is customary to greet others when entering small shops or lifts; politeness is highly valued by the locals.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not photograph local residents without their permission, especially in traditional settlements. Also, avoid walking alone in remote areas after dark.
  8. Additional Tip. Visit the Belen market early in the morning to see the true rhythm of jungle life, but remain vigilant with your belongings in the crowd.

Following these simple rules will help you enjoy the unique atmosphere of Iquitos without unnecessary worries or unpleasant surprises.
