The total area of this majestic structure exceeds 24,000 m². Inside are high-tech venues: the main auditorium with 803 seats and a cozy chamber stage. Thanks to its location near Mill Island, the building harmoniously fits into the urban landscape, reflecting in the river waters and creating ideal conditions for aesthetic relaxation.

Today, Opera Nova is a vibrant epicenter of art, where classical ballet and opera traditions meet modern technical capabilities. In the evening, when the artistic lighting is turned on, the building's cylinders look particularly spectacular, catching the eyes of residents and visitors alike.

What to Do

A visit to Opera Nova offers guests a rich cultural program. The main reason audiences come here is for the magnificent opera and ballet performances, musicals, and classical music concerts. If your trip coincides with the annual Bydgoszcz Opera Festival, you can witness performances by the world's best ensembles on a single stage.

Beyond the performances, the theater invites you on fascinating backstage tours. This is a rare chance to see the work of makeup artists, visit rehearsal halls, and observe the complex stage mechanics hidden from the public eye. For business travelers, there is a modern conference center that frequently hosts international symposia and forums.

Complete your visit at the "Maestra" restaurant. Here, you can enjoy exquisite European cuisine and panoramic views of the river through floor-to-ceiling windows. It is the perfect place to discuss the performance in an elegant and peaceful setting.

Getting There

Opera Nova is located in the heart of the city, on the scenic embankment of the Brda River, in close proximity to the historic Mill Island. Thanks to its central location, the theater is easily accessible on foot from most popular tourist spots in the city center.

If you arrive by train, the journey from the main railway station takes no more than 10–15 minutes. You can take a tram or bus, which run regularly toward the center. The nearest public transport stops are just a few minutes' walk from the main entrance.

History & Facts

The history of Opera Nova is full of unexpected turns and spanned nearly half a century. The first design for the building was proposed back in 1960 by architect Józef Chmiel. However, the path from blueprint to reality was long and difficult: construction was frozen multiple times due to administrative and financial hurdles.

During periods of stagnation, the fate of the unfinished structure hung by a thread. There were some quite extravagant proposals for its use: there were serious suggestions to turn the building into a multi-functional arts center or even a toilet paper factory. Fortunately for art lovers, these plans were never realized.

In the 1970s, the project was revised and adapted for modern needs by co-author Andrzej Prusiewicz. The building took on its final form of three cylinders, combining the functions of a theater and a congress center. The long-term project was officially completed only in 2006, eventually becoming one of the most striking examples of late Polish modernism.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the beauty of Opera Nova, it is recommended to set aside 2 to 4 hours. This is enough time for a leisurely look at the building's architectural features, attending a performance, and taking a short walk along the banks of the Brda River.

If you plan a visit without attending a show, one hour will suffice to take commemorative photos and look into the foyer. However, for full immersion, it is worth booking a table at the local restaurant and enjoying the evening illumination, which transforms the building into a true light masterpiece.

Working Hours

The operating hours of Opera Nova are directly linked to the schedule of rehearsals and planned events. The theater's box offices are usually open to visitors daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and on performance days, ticket sales continue until the start of the show.

As the repertoire is constantly updated, tourists are strongly advised to check the official website before visiting to confirm performance start times or any technical breaks in box office operations.
